.nyc is a proposed city-level top-level domain for New York City. The concept of the .nyc TLD was originally passed by Community Board 3, Queens, the City of New York, on April 19, 2001, though an official proposal to ICANN has not been made at this stage.
The main goals of .nyc is to improve tourism and marketing of local businesses towards visitors and also encourage a sense of community within the city residents. Once launched, a directory and search engine will be created specifically for the new TLD.
Connecting.NYC's mission statement for the proposed TLD is as follows:
“ | As the Internet inches its way to connect every person and machine around the globe, it becomes central to civic, commercial, community, and cultural life. Those with the best tools and understanding of its capabilities will prosper. Through research, education, training, workshops, and outreach efforts, Connecting.nyc will prepare the city for the networked future. It will use the .nyc top level domain (TLD) as an organizing force to empower New York City's residents, institutions, and businesses to better connect with one another and to present their information, knowledge, and cultural resources to the world. The opportunity to acquire the .nyc TLD will arise in 2007. This [organization] coordinates the .nyc TLD's acquisition. | ” |
The proposed Request for Proposal for new TLDs will be brought before the ICANN meeting in early 2008 with the review and approval process taking several months.
