Kolovai is a village composed of approximately 800 people, located in the western district (Vahe Hihifo) of Tongatapu, on the main road between Haʻavakatolo and ʻĀhau.
Kolovai is a community that is known for its well-maintained appearance and active local pride. Kolovai hosts a Health Center, a banquet and concert hall, two primary schools, and the Western District Youth Hall and Computer Center (established by the US Peace Corps). Kolovai belongs to the estate of Ata, who lives in ʻApi ko Liukava. To the north of town once stood the koka tree under which a new Tuʻi Kanokupolu was installed. Kolovai is also famous for its fruit bats colony.
Kolovai is situated on a peninsula with its east side facing a vast lagoon, offering vistas of magnificent sunrises, and its west side is open to the grand Pacific Ocean, which makes for unforgettable sunset viewings. On the ocean side lays the renowned Good Samaritan Resort, most well known for its Friday night dinner show and performance. Next to the Good Samaritan lies the busy Masiata Beach and Picnic Area, possibly the most popular beach in the Kingdom. Kolovai also has historical significance. It was this village that welcomed Reverend Thomas, Tonga's first successful Christian missionary, living in the still existing house of Cokevernal. He impressed the population at that time by apparently stopping the tide with an umbrella on the beach (at the lagoon side) still known as Keitahi.
One part of the beach at the ocean side contains the finest sand of the whole coast. It is known as Fala ʻo Sētana (mat of Satan) (or Fala ʻo Ata). FOKI
