Doesn't the definition of zo papri specifically mean a physical object?

I think so. What terms should be used for (a) a non-physical collection of information and (b) a subunit of such a collection? 81.168.80.170 22:36, 9 Aug 2004 (UTC)

A non-physical (or non-paper) collection of information cukta, as long as it has an author and an audience and is preserved in some medium. I see nothing wrong with calling a web page {papri}, since we have no other word for a page that isn't a sheet of some material. lo cukta ka'e se zbasu fi lo pelji gi'enai se papri; it could be written on a single long sheet and rolled up into a scroll. -Pier 13:59, 10 Aug 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Unsolicited advice

Just a thought: one of the best ways to get a large number of usable articles right away is to input the events that happened throughout history, year by year. Usually the url is just a simple 1560 (for the year 1560), and a negative for BC though some do it differently. It's easy enough to make up a standard format saying Events Births Deaths

and a few other things, along with links at the top to the next and preceding years, plus categories for the decade and century. Assuming that a few of the people here are still learning the language it would make for good practice as the sentences need only be as simple as "King Ronald the Third invades Polonia", Deaths - King Geulloja of Baekjae in Korea, that sort of thing.

[edit] Names

When Lojbanizing the name of a person or a place, I suggest not using the English pronunciation unless there is a good reason for it. In particular, if you don't know how the original name is pronounced in its original language, it is much safer to leave the vowels a, e, i, o, u as they are spelt and never change them to ei, i, ai, ou, iu.

I mostly agree. I think the spelling of a name is of more fundamental importance than the pronunciation, so the spelling is what should stay in tact. However, sometimes I think some modification does have to be made. For example, I recently lojbanized "Rickman" to be "rikmen." I couldn't leave the 'c' in because "rickman." is too hard to pronounce in lojban and the lojban 'c' sounds very different from the english 'c'. I also had the names "Quinn" and "Wade" to deal with; those had to be changed because 'q' and 'w' don't exist in lojban, and also lojban doesn't allow double letters and it might sound too awkward to have an 'e' on the end which was silent in english which would have to have a consonant added to it anyway. Kybunon 18:08, 21 April 2006 (UTC)
I wasn't suggesting not basing the name on pronunciation. All I said is not to base it on *English* pronunciation when the name is not particularly associated with the English language.

Another issue with names: Please don't use commas and capital letters for names other than your own! Stress and syllabification patterns are free in cmevla, they don't change the name. Commas and capitalization can only show your preferred pronunciation, but any other variant is permitted for the same name, so there is no reason to uglyfy the Lojban spelling for everyone just to show the pronunciation of a cmevla that a particular person likes best.

I think sometimes commas are necessary. For example, in the name "Diana", "di,anas." is necessary instead of "dianas." because the "ia" together make different sounds than "i" and "a" individually. Kybunon 21:41, 1 May 2006 (UTC)
In Lojban, {dianas}, {di,anas}, {DI,anas}, {dian,AS}, etc. are all one and the same name. All that the commas and capitals show is the preferred pronunciation of a given speaker.
The Reference Grammar (chapter 4, verse 8) says, "[names] are penultimately stressed, unless unusual stress is marked with capitalization" and "[names] may be stressed on any syllable; if this syllable is not the penultimate one, it must be capitalized when writing." This implies that {DI,anas} is not a valid reading of {dianas}. However, the Reference Grammar also says, "if possible and acceptable, shift the stress to the penultimate (next-to-the-last) syllable", i.e. we should still avoid capital letters in most cases for stylistic reasons.—75.2.73.201 16:50, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

Is it allowed to have additional full stops in the middle of the name in Lojban? In the Finnish language combinations "la" and "lai" are common in names and some difficulties make that the double consonants and double vowels are pronounced much longer than usually in other languages. To make an example of a Finnish newspaper "Kalajokilaakso", the usual way to lojbanize it would be "kaleiokileksos." which makes it difficult for Finnish people to recognize. I would prefer form "kal.aiokil.a'aksos." but is it possible to split name in Lojban like this? Another example, "Matti" (Nykänen is well known). The double consonant is pronounced really long, almost having a pause in it and "mat.tis." would be nearer the real pronounciation than "matis." --Gallinago 19:13, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

to zoi gy It's allowed, but I suggest posing this question at the lojban beginners' mailing list. My feeling is that these questions will have to be answered by consensus of the Finnish and Estonian Lojbanists.
