I Soul Asylum sono una band americana di rock alternativo formatasi a Minneapolis, in Minnesota nel 1983. La band nasce da una band locale, i Loud Fast Rules, che era stata formata nel 1981 da Dan Murphy, Dave Pirner, Karl Mueller and Pat Morley. Morley è stato successivamente sostituito da Grant Young nel 1984. La band registrò tre album con la Twin/Tone Records e due con la A&M Records, con cui ottennero un piccolo successo commerciale. In particolare nel 1992 pubblicarono l’album Grave Dancers Union, premiato con un doppio disco di platino, e parteciparono ai Grammy Award vincendo con il singolo Runaway Train. Successivamente ottennero, tre anni più tardi, il disco di platino con l’album Let Your Dim Light Shine. Quest’ultimo comunque fu l’ultimo hit album per la band. Nel 2004 a Muller fu diagnosticato un cancro, così la band organizzò un concerto benefico a suo favore, ma morì l’anno seguente. Tuttora la band continua la loro attività live.
