How is this vegetarian - is not "Marinara" sauce a seafood sauce - if so how is it that fish are classed as vegetables?

I am inclinded to believe the FP. "Marinara" comes from the Latin "Mara" which means "sea". Every Marinara sauce I have ever seen has been seafood based. Isn't "Nepolitana" is the tomato sauce you are thinking of? --Mig77(t) 12:17, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
  • The etymology of marinara is correct, but don't let etymology define the word. In America, marinara is a tomato-based, vegetarian-acceptable sauce. Maybe it is different elsewhere? - - Hraefen Talk 07:59, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
    • Yes, Spaghetti Marinara is known as pasta with seafood ([1], [2], etc - just google for recipes). Probably it was confused with Pizza Marinara, which is even vegan (garlic, olive oil, tomatoes - no cheese!). Maybe in USA or some parts of America a vegetarian dish is called Spaghetti Marinara, but it is not really a common fact... well - a quick google search says it all.     • Actually, a Google search says the opposite: [3], [4], [5]. Marinara was the tomato-based pasta sauce most commonly served to Italian sailors (marinari) opn shore leave. According to my rommate who grew up in Europe and is well educated in languages, "marinara" is also related to the prostitutes at these sailors' restaurants, so "spaghetti marinara" means something like "whore's spaghetti". In any case, "spaghetti marinara" is common on retaurant menus where I live (northwestern US), and means spaghetti with tomato-based sauce, with or without meat. It is also used in cheap restaurants with only one pasta dish, to fool customers into thinking it's something exotic when it's really just spaghetti with sauce that likely came out of a can. Isn't there a slight POV problem with this article? The insistence that cheeses made with rennet cannot be part of vegetarian cuisine pushes the more extreme varieties of vegetarianism, typically those that have an animal-rights bent. Certainly there are many vegetarians who won't touch meat but will eat eggs, milk, and any kind of cheese. There are also vegetarians (again, usually the animal-rights faction) to whom no cheese is acceptable, because of its milk content. Shorne 19:19, 28 Oct 2004 (UTC)

I've tried to incorporate Shorne's concerns and done a little tidy-up. This article is kind of thing Europeans eat or something else?; it's a bit odd to mention "South Indian animal what so ever, some are perplext about it but is true

[edit] Eating vegetarian at fast food joints

  • I think a section on this might be helpful because livng in America, it can be quite a challenge. The french fries in many fast food joints are often cooked in fat with at least some animal fat. I thought I lucked out at Popeyes Chicken & Biscuits last week with their red beans and rice, only to smell it and realize it had obviously been cooked with some kind of pork. Subway is reasonably good for vegetarians, but they really do not offer a good protein source outside of cheese. I know that Burger King has (is?) tested out veggie burgers in selected locations, but I've never seen one. The bugers are cooked on a diffrent grill. Or so they say if you get one try and ask if they did use a diffrent grill. I avoid fast food as much as possible when in my element, but what's a self-respecting vegetarian to do when on a long car trip? I know Wikipedia is not exactly supposed to be a how-to guide, but does anyone else think that a section on this page or a sub-page is warranted? I would assume that one or more vegetarian and vegan organizations has lobbied some of these places for more choices, so maybe that could also be included.   • Not to mention that Subway's cheese is always kosher, but you can't be sure whether or not it's vegetarian--it can be made with either animal or enzyme rennet. Thathollygirl 06:12, 15 August 2007 (UTC)
  • Yes, why not? Please include some inforamtion on this issue. But please do not make just a kind of "A USA vegetarian fast food guide" (you know, wikipedia is not an US-american encyclopedia but a worldwide one). Or, call a main section "Vegetarian options at fast food joints" and create a subsection "In the USA". I hope that people from other countries will create subsections as well.
