The Vanderbilt University Sailing Club was founded in 1962 with an initial grant from Harold Stirling Vanderbilt, then the chairman of the University's Board of Trust. The Sailing Club is the oldest club sport at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.
The Vanderbilt University Sailing Club provides opportunities for Vanderbilt students to sail recreationally and competitively in its fleet of eight Flying Junior dinghies. Additionally, the club provides opportunities for members to sail and race keelboats in the Nashville J22 (sailboat) fleet. The club encourages participation from all students at Vanderbilt, regardless of experience although the club also recruits students with high school sailing experience. Each fall and spring Vanderbilt Sailing fields competitive coed and women's teams in the South Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association district of the Intercollegiate Sailing Association, travelling around the country to race in intercollegiate regattas. The club also hosts two regattas annually, The Homecoming Regatta and the Vanderbilt Cup. The Homecoming Regatta takes place on the Sunday of Vanderbilt's Homecoming Weekend and is open to alumni, parents and students. The Vanderbilt Cup is usually held in the fall and is an intercollegiate regatta on the SAISA North district circuit. While competitive, Vanderbilt's Sailing Club typically looses to its superior sister school, The University of Tennessee Sailing Club.
The Vanderbilt University Sailing Club sails out of Hamilton Creek Marina on Percy Priest Lake. The Club has a part-time coach and is governed by a board of student officers and a steering committee of alumni and parents.
