The University of Hull Scarborough Campus is a higher education institution in the North Yorkshire town of Scarborough - and (as its name suggests) a satellite campus of the University of Hull.

[edit] History

The institution started life in 1947 as North Riding College, a regional centre for teacher training in the north-east of England. In 1994, the college became University College Scarborough and began offering BSc and BA degree level courses in an effort to respond to the drastic fall in demand for teacher training places that threatened it with closure in the early 1990s. The institution changed to its present name when it became a campus of the University of Hull in August 2000.

[edit] Present Day

Today the university campus, with its liberal arts feel, offers a wide range of courses undergraduate and post-graduate across the sciences, social sciences and arts, many of these courses taking full advantage of the richness of Scarborough's natural seaside environment. There is a student population of approximately 1600[1]. This is from the University's total student population of 19,818[2].

Teaching and research at the Scarborough Campus is based around five academic units:

  • Centre for Environmental and Marine Sciences (Coastal Marine Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science)
  • School of Arts & New Media (Theatre, Digital Art, Creative Music Technology, Internet Computing, English, Dance)
  • School of Education (Primary Education, PGCE, Education Studies, Early Years)
  • Management Centre (Tourism & Leisure Management, Business Studies, International Business)
  • Centre for Lifelong Learning (a range of continuing education and professional development courses)

[edit] School of Arts & New Media

The School was newly formed in August 2006, combining the Centre for Internet Computing with Arts courses. The Creative Music Technology students work alongside ex-Goldfrapp drummer, Rowan Oliver[3], and have many successful graduates including Fame Academy’s Sinead Quinn and more recently, Stephen Carter who is part of punk rock band Gallows.

[edit] Cayley Halls

Cayley Halls were purpose built in 2000, as ensuite single rooms for student accommodation, also suitable for conference letting. The halls are named in honour of George Cayley, Scarborough's "Father of Aerodynamics". A plaque commemorating this can be found in the entrance of D block.

Each room consists of:

  • Single bed
  • Desk
  • Shelves
  • Wardrobe
  • Bedside table
  • Lamp
  • Internal telephone (external calling scheme can be purchased)
  • Internet connection (wired, set-up charge)
  • Ensuite bathroom (power shower, toilet, sink, mirror)

There are 6 blocks, from A to F, with 3 or more floors, each with 10-12 rooms and a shared kitchen. Each shared kitchen has cupboards, fridge, freezer, microwave, table, chairs, ironing board, mop and vacuum.

Heating and lighting is included in the rent, along with a food allowance to be spent in the refectory or Calvinos.

[edit] Facilities

On campus there is a refectory, serving hot and cold meals and beverages throughout the day, with reduced weekend opening hours. The University has is Scarborough's Flagship Fairtrade Employer[4] and stocks fairtrade coffee, tea and other products as standard. There is also provision for food in Calvinos cafe bar, which was redeveloped over summer 2007. Calvinos was reopened at 6pm, September 22nd 2007[5] by The BarWizards, Neil Lowry and Neil Garner.

There is extensive computer provision in Worseley Building, known as Open Access. The University is part of Eduroam wireless scheme[6], allowing students to register wireless devices on the network. There is additional computing provision in the Java, Cappucino and Courtyard Labs, though access is restricted to students with access cards.

The campus has its own specialist library, the Keith Donaldson Library, equipped with a specialist media room, and study room.

[edit] Student Union

The Student Union at Scarborough is situated on the third floor of the main building, and offers basic services such as an Advice Centre and games room (with pool tables, table tennis, arcade games, vending machines, freeview television). The Union is staffed by two members of staff, the Union Manager Wayne Cullen, and Administrator Helen McManus, who assist Vice-President Scarborough Campus (2007-8) Tom Metcalfe and his team of volunteer executives. They are for 2007-8:

  • Academic Issues: Kate Davies
  • Accommodation: Natalie Ensor
  • Communications: Joe Dix
  • Societies: Josh Parkin Kelley
  • Sports: Chris Zeal
  • Volunteering: Alexander Wheble
  • Welfare and Equality: Sarah Francis

From 2008 there will also be an International executive.
