University High School (Waco)

University High School is located at 2600 Bagby Avenue in Waco, Texas.
University High School is a part of the Waco Independent School District. UHS is a Texas 4A public high school. As of August 2006, the enrollment was 1146 students and 92 teachers. The ethnicity is roughly African American: 31.2%, Hispanic: 61.3%, White: 7.2%, Other: 0.3%. The current principal is Nolan Correa. Assistant principals include Carol Jo Mize (12th grade), Dee Dosher (11th grade), Joseph Alexander (10th grade), and Larry Capenter (9th grade).
UHS is now rated Academically Acceptable by the Texas Education Agency.
Some of the original campus buildings still exist. These were stone buildings, each housing about four classrooms. The school started as Waco Technical High School in the 1950's.
The mascot for University High School Athletics is the Trojan and the colors are purple and white. The school participates in football, volleyball, girls and boys basketball, girls and boys soccer, girls and boys track, golf, and cross country.
Notable alumni include: LaDainian Tomlinson, former Texas Christian University football star and current single-season touchdown record-holder in the NFL. He plays for the San Diego Chargers.
Walter Abercrombie, all-time leading rusher for Baylor University also attended University High. He played for the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1980's.
