- On September 1, 2002, the Ryanair Flight 685 from the Stockholm-Västerås Airport to London Stansted was delayed by several hours after a Swedish man of Arabic descent was detained after attempting to board the aircraft with a loaded gun in his hand luggage. Subsequent media reports suggested that he was going to hijack the aircraft and crash it into the United States Embassy in London[1]; however, Sweden's Security Service, Säpo, denied the claims and called the reports "false information" [2]. No confirmation of these allegations was found in the following police investigation and trial [3] and the man was cleared of all terrorism-related charges [4]. The man said that he usually carries a gun and forgot to remove it from his handbag before this journey.
