Star Trek is a fictional science fiction universe created by Gene Roddenberry in the early-1960s. The term Star Trek collectively refers to six science fiction/fantasy television series spanning 726 episodes, ten motion pictures (with an eleventh film coming in 2009) and hundreds of novels. As well, there are Star Trek table-top role-playing games, trading card games, console and computer video games, action figures and model kit spaceships, and other works of fiction. All of these fictional works and games are set within the same fictional universe created by Gene Roddenberry between the early 1960s and the early 2000s. This universe depicts an optimistic future in which humankind has overcome sickness, racism, poverty, intolerance, and warfare on Earth. The central characters explore the galaxy, finding new worlds and meeting new civilizations, while helping to promote peace and understanding. Star Trek is one of the most popular names in science fiction entertainment, and it is one of the most popular franchises in television history.

The Akira class starship is a type of Starfleet starship serving in the Star Trek fictional universe. With its impressive array of defensive and offensive capabilities, the Akira class of starships is often well-represented at the front line of Federation battle fleets. Akira-class starships served during the Dominion War; several Akira-class starships were destroyed by Cardassian orbital defense platforms in the Chin'toka system in 2374. The Akira class also served during the Battle of Sector 001 in 2373.

Ships of the Akira-class are large vessels composed of a circular, saucer-shaped primary hull with a low-slung navigational deflector and two beams rising from the top heading aft; the beams attach to an arch, which supports two warp nacelles at its ends and a weapons pod that fires photon torpedoes at its zenith. Like the Steamrunner class, the main bridge, primary dorsal phaser strip and lifeboats are embedded into the saucer to provide for better protection from enemy fire by blocking against attacks. The ventral saucer is occupied with the navigational deflector, a photon torpedo tube and additional lifeboats. The design of the Akira-class superficially resembles a catamaran and the old NX-class, particularly from the dorsal profile. • J. J. Abrams made public on February 23, 2007 the decision that he will direct Star Trek XI.
• The producer for the next and upcoming Star Trek film was revealed to be J. J. Abrams. His various contributions to television include writing for programmes such as Lost, Alias, and Felicity. Star Trek XI will be written and produced by J.J. Abrams for release in 2009. A full interview with J.J. Abrams was interviewed by the New York Times before being revealed as the producer and writer for Star Trek XI here is a link: Abram's New York Times Interview

• Alexander Siddig has also played the part of The Angel Gabriel in the film The Nativity Story released on the 1st December of last year. This follows his more recent role in film Kingdom of Heaven amongst others.

• In July's Comic Con taking place in San Diego guests include the likes of Nichelle Nichols as well Chase Masterson presenting a short film called Déjà Vu directed and written by Tim Russ and co-starring Garrett Wang. Others include Ira Steven Behr, René Echevarria and Ronald D. Moore who are there to talk about Star Trek but also about The 4400 and Battlestar Galactica. • The composer and writer of Where my heart will take me, the opening theme music to Star Trek: Enterprise, Diane Warren received The Crystal Award for her work on that particular song by the organization of Women in Film.
