The Simple English Wikipedia is an English edition of the Wikipedia encyclopedia, written in Basic English. The site's stated aim is to be useful for children, those learning English,[1] those wanting to know basic information about a topic (not in depth),[2] those who are partially literate in English, and those who have learning disabilities. It also intends to serve as a basis for translating articles to other Wikipedias.[3]
Many articles are shorter than their English Wikipedia counterparts.[4]
On July 26, 2006, the Simple English Wikipedia reached 10,000 articles. As of January 27, 2008, it had over 24,000 articles, over 67,000 pages, and over 14,000 registered users. As of May 23, 2008, it has over 28,000 articles, over 80,000 pages, and over 18,000 registered users.[5]
