Sharanya Manivannan

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sharanya Manivannan is a writer, dancer, painter, actress, photographer, journalist and activist. She is currently working on her first novel, Constellation of Scars and a collection of poems, Witchcraft. In late 2006 she released a limited edition handmade chapbook of poems and illustrations, Iyari. Her solo spoken word show, Ochre As The Earth, held on June 3 2007, was a pioneering event in the Kuala Lumpur arts scene.

Sharanya was born in India on 30 July 1985 and grew up in Sri Lanka and Malaysia. She lives in Kuala Lumpur and Chennai. She is well-known for both her unique bilingual (English, Tamil) writing and performances. She is well-known as the first and only writer to use both languages in Malaysia's modern underground independent writers' community.

She has received positive remarks about her writing from international writers such as Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha, Indran Amirthanayagam, Francesca Beard, Shreekumar Varma and Laksmi Pamuntjak. She is also a blogger, and partly responsible for raising international awareness through her blog on temple demolitions in Malaysia. Her open letter to Indian PM Manmohan Singh on the issue was nominated for the 2007 Koufax Awards in the category of Best Post.
