Category:Science fiction anthology series
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This category is for series of anthologies in science fiction or one of its sub-genres
— collections of stories where the books collecting them has some common tie. This category thusly encompasses stories written within a shared universe by multiple authors in multiple volumes
Or
Collections that are themselves a series in some regard, such as "best Science Fiction of year" collections, or "By Editor", etcetera.
"Single fictional universe series" are usually created as the proprietary work of a single author (e.g. Larry Niven's Known Space tales) in which other writers are invited or desire to write a story within, and which spin-offs, if they become a series instead of a single work, are considered a sub-series:
- Niven's Man-Kzin Wars sub-series is the shared universe sub-series of his Known Space series.
- David Weber's Anthology series "Worlds of Honor" sub-series is his edited sharing of his honorverse universe.
- Both the above, are somewhat to the side of the main plotlines of the series, whereas,
- Eric Flint's 1632 series (Ring of Fire series), is atypical, because Flint from the outset invited other established writers to help research and establish series canon, which process he maintained and continues with the Grantville Gazettes and manages with 1632 Editorial Board. (Most writer's don't have enthusiastic helpers volunteering professional skills, researches and historically important or interesting data.) More to the point, even most of the long fiction in the series is with a co-author.
