[edit] Another Esperanzial note...
Hi again Esperanzians! Well, since our last frolic in the realms of news, the Advisory Council has met twice more (see WP:ESP/ACM2 and WP:ESP/ACM3). As a result, the charter has been ammended twice (see here for details) and all of the shortcuts have been standardised (see the summary for more details). Also of note is the Valentines ball that will take place in the Esperanza IRC channel on the 14th of February (tomorrow). It will start at 6pm UTC and go on until everyone's had enough! I hope to see you all there! Also, the spamlist has been dissolved - all Esperanzians will now recieve this update "newsletter".
The other major notice I need to tell you about is the upcoming Esperanza Advisory Council Elections. These will take place from 12:00 UTC on February 20th to 11:59 UTC on February 27th. The official handing-over will take place the following day. Candidates are able to volunteer any time before the 20th, so long as they are already listed on the members list. Anyone currently listed on the memberlist can vote. In a change since last time, if you have already been a member of the leadership, you may run again. Due to the neutrality precident, I will not vote for anyone.
Yours, as ever, Esperanzially,

Since this isn't the result of an AC meeting, I have decided to go Old Skool. This note is to remind you that the elections are taking place now and will end at 23:50 UTC on 2006-04-29. Please vote here. Thanks. --Celestianpower háblame 20:42, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Scouting article work
If you are getting this, it is because you do or did work on Scouting articles (see Wikipedia:WikiProject_Scouting#Participants_and_primary_areas_of_interest).
As the Scouting WikiProject has been formed since early January 2006, we've had many great improvements made in this area of Wiki and I want to personally thank everyone for their help. We don't always agree on things, but we keep moving forward. YIS, Rlevse 22:09, 25 April 2006 (UTC)

Schyler,
I came across your user page because I'm a regular at the science reference desk, and I saw your post there. Also, if you check your archive, you'll remember that we've had a fair amount of correspondence in the past. :o) I'm glad you're still enjoying Wikipedia, and always feel free to leave me a message. [edit] License tagging for Image:Unknown.ogg
Thanks for uploading Image:Unknown.ogg. Wikipedia gets hundreds of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.
For more information on using images, see the following pages:
This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 01:05, 9 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Machine translation
Please, avoid using machine translations when translating an article from another wikiproject as you did in Universidad Nacional de La Plata, because it introduces a series of errors that are hard to detect, making it preferable to translate them from the original language, since such articles are usually abandoned in a bad state. Thanks, Mariano(t/c) 16:19, 9 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] What does it mean though?
It's an extended chord. Fb-major-13 is all the notes of the Fb major scale taken together as a chord: Fb, Ab, Cb, Eb, Gb, Bbb, Db. -sharp-9-sharp-11 means the ninth and the eleventh are sharpened: Gb -> G and Bbb -> Bb. So Fb-major-13-sharp-9-sharp-11 is Fb, Ab, Cb, Eb, G, Bb, Db. —Keenan Pepper 02:22, 17 May 2006 (UTC)
It's totally inappropriate terminology, but it works. =P —Keenan Pepper 02:23, 17 May 2006 (UTC)
Not necessarily an augmented interval, but whatever the default interval for that chord is, increased by one semitone. —Keenan Pepper 13:30, 17 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] A short Esperanzial update
As you may have gathered, discussions have been raging for about a week on the Esperanza talk page as to the future direction of Esperanza. Some of these are still ongoing and warrant more input (such as the idea to scrap the members list altogether). However, some decisions have been made and the charter has hence been amended. See what happened. Basically, the whole leadership has had a reshuffle, so please review the new, improved charter.
As a result, we are electing 4 people this month. They will replace JoanneB and Pschemp and form a new tranche A, serving until December. Elections will begin on 2006-07-02 and last until 2006-07-09. If you wish to run for a Council position, add your name to the list before 2006-07-02. For more details, see Wikipedia:Esperanza/June 2006 elections.
Thanks and kind, Esperanzial regards, —Celestianpower háblame 16:00, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] WRONG MEDICAL ADVISE
What you did just now at the reference desk is unforgivable. While attempting a silly joke, you gave wrong medical advise. I'm a bit puzzled by this edit. For me the 5th bullet on the left side states: Please don't write in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS. I assume you're referring to the homework clause. [edit] Shtuff to do in NYC in Spring
Lived in NYC for a short while, and here were some of our standards for introducing friends and family to the city:
Really good food:
- Amazingly good Pastrami, not to be missed: Katz's Deli
- Tremendous, very traditional New York style pizza (and my personal favorite): Lombardi's. Be sure to try the plain old margherite. Yum.
- Thai food: it's upscale and a bit yuppy, but I love Rain on 82nd st.
- Brazilian cuisine from little Brazil, and my favorite steak in town (and that's saying a lot in NYC!): Emporium Brasil. For a steak you will remember, order the picanha na grelha.
- Spring break? Soup Kitchen International may still be open - it's a seasonal sidewalk restaurant with amazing soup. Seinfeld's Soup Nazi was patterened after this.
- If you're cucoo for good cheese (like me), plan on visiting Artisanal. It's got the feel of a Parisian bistro, and a menu to match. But I usually skip the food and head to the wines and cheeses. Around 100 wines available by the glass, and a fromagere with unusually good taste.
Fun outings:
- Subway to Brooklyn Heights. Architectural tour of Brownstones, followed by a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge into Manhattan. From there, it's an easy walk through Wall Street, Trinity Church, then Ground Zero and over to Battery Park. Count on 3-5 hours, depending upon your interest in each of those locations.
- Yankee Stadium or Shea Stadium if there's a home game
- In springtime, the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens are amazingly beautiful.
- Several good farmers markets pop up all over town on weekends. Union Square has one that's small but nice.
- Broadway, of course.
- The Lower East Side is a trip not to miss. Be sure to stop at Kossar's for one of NYC's best bagels. Also, several pickle shops which give you an opportunity to sample a truly regional cuisine.
- Bars? Nightclubs? Waaay too many to present you with any kind of a meaningful list. I personally enjoy d.b.a. on 1st avenue for beers and single-malts. For a little clubbier scene, perhaps the Hudson Hotel. I hear the Ford Models agency often houses their talent there. Don't know if it's true, but it always seems to be full of beautiful people. They have a great 2nd-story courtyard that is wonderful if the weather is warm.

Thanks for uploading Image:Thingsfallapartcover.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Los_Elefantes.ogg
Thanks for uploading Image:Los_Elefantes.ogg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. ShakespeareFan00 10:48, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] It's homework, but I need help!
I think you need to study, in particular, quadratic equation. If you can solve quadratic equations, you can do most of these exercises.
1.(3) Write in the form when
- The phrase "in the form when " means the same as: "in the form ". See Polynomial division. You have to divide by
2.(4) Write the quadratic function, , in standard form. THen find the vertex, axis of symmetry, and x-intercepts. (on this problem I think I remember soemthign about (-h,k) or something)
- I am not sure what is meant by "standard" in the course you are taking, but possibly it means, write in the form . In that case the vertex is reached when , and then . The graph of a quadratic function is a parabola, and if the vertex is at , then that is also the equation of the axis of symmetry. The x-intercepts are the same as the zeros of , which you find by solving the quadratic equation .
3.(19) A rectangular field has a perimeter of 306 feet and is to have an area at least 5670 square feet. Within what bounds must the length, x, of the rectangular field lie?
- Call the length and width of the field and . Then the perimeter is and the area is . Let us take "foot" as the unit, so and . Combining that with the formulas for and , we have:
- and .
- We have two unknowns, and , but using the first equation we can eliminate one of the two; it does not matter which one. Let us eliminate . The first equation tells us that , so . Plugging this into the other equation, we get
- .
- Expand this, bring everything to one side, and you have a standard quadratic inequality, which can be solved just as the next one.
4.(26) Solve: (do I jsut factor and the answer is ?)
- The factorization is correct, but you forgot the "< 0" part. , so is the same as:
- .
- If the problem had "= 0", the answer would be: or , since these are the two values for for which the product is equal to 0. But you need to have "< 0". If you look at the graph of a tame function such as we have here, the sign of the function value can only change at the points where the function has a zero. The two zeros and cut open the x-axis into three more parts: , , and . Inside each of these three parts, the function does not change its sign; it is either < 0 or > 0 there. Which it is, you can test by computing the function values for some inside each part, for example , , and .
5.(27) Solve:
- See above: bring everything to one side and solve as before. You can simplify the calculations somewhat by multiplying everything by 10 first.
6. (20) Find the domain and range of the function.
- See domain and range. You can't divide by zero, so you must exclude such values from the function domain as make the divisor equal to 0. What happens to as goes to infinity? Since x cannot actually reach infinity, perhaps can't reach the value either it tends to as gets larger and larger. If is that value (or any other value), and you can't solve the equation for , you know that is not in the range. If you can solve the equation, then is in the range.
7. (21) Find the domain of the function.
- Here the issue is that you can't take the square root of a negative value. So the domain consists only of the values for such that is zero or positive.
I hope this helps you on the way. Good luck with the test. --Lambiam 21:03, 30 September 2007 (UTC)
