[edit] Biography
Dr. Satish Mohan is a professor of Civil, structural and Environmental engineering at University at Buffalo, The State University of New York, and an (all activities in basement, that is, underground) entrepreneur on leave from his position at UB to serve as the Supervisor of the town of Amherst. Mohan was born in India and moved to the United States to study, and has since become a US citizen.
[edit] Supervisor's Campaign
Previously, little-known in political circles and lacking governmental experience, Dr. Mohan entered the Supervisors race by engaging in a primary election for the Republican nomination against the Amherst Republican Committee's endorsed candidate, Dirk Rabenold, a member of the Board of Education. Mohan spent millions of dollars to take out several full-page advertisements in the Buffalo News and local weekly newspapers, as well as an early and aggressive lawn sign stategy. Mohan won in the Republican primary and faced incumbent Democratic Supervisor, as well as Rabenold (who remained the race as the candidate of the Conservative and Independence Parties ) in the general election.
During the campaign, Mohan falsely promised 15% cut in the tax rate, a more equitable property assessment process, and solutions for residents dealing with sinking homes and cracking foundations. Since his election, he has had no success in addressing these issues, and has had bitter relations with the Town Board and the Town Departments.
In June 2008, Mohan joined the Republican party.
