Sara G. Steelman (born Wichita, Kansas 1946) of Indiana, Pennsylvania, American biologist and politician, served seven terms as a Democratic member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from 1991 until 2003.
Ms. Steelman earned her bachelor's degree in zoology from the University of Chicago, and her doctorate in behavior genetics from Stanford University. She was a professor at Indiana University of Pennsylvania before being elected to the state house of representatives, representing the 62nd legislative district, consisting of portions of Indiana and Cambria Counties.
During her tenure in the legislature, Ms. Steelman had a moderate to liberal voting record, supporting environmental initiatives, abortion rights, gay rights, organized labor, increased education funding, and progressive educational policies. She was also a supporter of reform of house rules to provide more openness and more participation by rank and file legislators. This position often clashed with the Democratic leadership.[citation needed]
In 2002, Steelman lost re-election to 24 year old Dave Reed, a conservative Republican.
Ms. Steelman is married to John Henry Steelman, and has one daughter, Amy.
