Sandymount

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sandymount (Dumhach Thrá in Irish) is a seaside village/suburb in the district of Dublin 4 in Ireland. Previous names for the area were "Brickfield Town" and "Scallet Hill" (a rabbit warren). It was once part of Pembroke Township.

[edit] Location and access

The area is bounded on the Strand Road and Beach Road side by the sea and the South Bull mudflats at Sandymount Strand and Merrion Strand. To the north is Irishtown on the way to Ringsend, and to the west, Ballsbridge.

Sandymount railway station is on the electrified (DART) suburban railway system, and was originally opened in January 1835.[1]

[edit] Religion

The Catholic church in Sandymount is dedicated to Our Lady Star of the Sea. Christ Church, on the Green, is a united Methodist and Presbyterian congregation, which appoints a minister from either denomination alternately.

Mount Tabor nursing home shares the grounds of the church.

The area is also home to a major house of the Franciscan Missionary Sisters for Africa.

[edit] Amenities

Sandymount Green is a (roughly) triangular park at the centre of Sandymount. Houses and shops face onto it and there is a bust of William Butler Yeats in the park. Small trees are the main foliage.

The supermarket currently operated by Tesco Ireland was previously part of the Quinnsworth chain, and before that, it was H. Williams. Mapothers on the Green was a newsagent, as was The Gem. On the corner opposite Ryan's pub was Bracken's store which burnt down.

Today, many of the family-run businesses have left the village such as Tom McCormack's fruit and veg shop, Roddys grocery shop, Streckers pork specialists, Molloys delicatessen, Johnny Duffy, barber, . The village also had a small petrol station, an antique shop and an electrical shop, specialising in TV sales and repairs. Franchises such as Tesco, Xtra Vision and Spar have made their presence felt but the overriding feel of the village is one of small owner-run businesses and the village contains almost all of the shops one could possibly need; butcher, cobbler, cafés, barber, chipper (Borza's), art gallery (Gallery 4), post office, clothes and shoe shops, book shop, Chemist(s) etc.

The village is served by three pubs, and a number of restaurants and cafés; including Dunne and Crecenzi, Mario's, Itsa4, Browne's and Cafe Java.

[edit] Points of note

Sandymount and Sandymount Strand feature prominently in several episodes of James Joyce's Ulysses.

Sandymount is the birthplace of poet W.B. Yeats.

Marian College and the former Sandymount High School and Roslyn Park were within walking distance of Sandymount village.
