Sandbridge Beach is a small beachside community in the independent city of Virginia Beach, Virginia, south of the Resort Oceanfront and the Dam Neck Naval Station. It is located on a strip of sand dunes between the Atlantic Ocean and Back Bay, at the northern end of the Outer Banks. Sandbridge is the site of Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, False Cape State Park and Little Island Park and Pier. The beach is popular with locals, particularly from the southern half of the city, because it is not as crowded as the resort area. The area mostly consists of beach cottages used as summer rentals or permanent residences.
In recent years, condominiums and larger beach homes have been built, causing some controversy. There is also debate about the extension of Nimmo Parkway from the Princess Anne area of Virginia Beach to Sandbridge. Currently, Sandbridge is only accessible by using the narrow and curving Sandbridge Road, which can be quite congested in the summer. The proposed route passes through the Wildlife Refuge and residents fear easier access may bring more visitors than the area can support.
