San José Canton

San José is the name of the first canton in the province of San José in Costa Rica. The canton covers an area of 44.62 km²[1], and has a population of 346,799[2]. It is contiguous with the national capital city of San José.
The canton lies on a fertile plain at the southern end of the Central Valley (Meseta Central). The Río Virilla and Río Torres form the border on the north, while the Río Tiribí marks the southern boundary. The canton encompasses San José Centro, although the Greater Metropolitan Area reaches far beyond in all directions.
Elevation ranges from 1,175 meters above sea level at Zapote at the southeast end of the canton, to 1,175 meters at Pavas at the northwest end.
The Mayor of San José Canton is Johnny Araya Monge.
Of the canton's population, 17.33% are under 10 years old and 7.67% are over 65.

Costa Rica 2000 Census appoints that the canton had 309,672 inhabitants (INEC estimates 344,747 inhabitants for June 30th, 2006), most of them living in neighbouring distritos of city center (the distritos of El Carmen, Merced, Hospital, and Catedral are commonly recognized as the city downtown; only 18% of the canton population inhabits these distritos).
San José had, in 2000, 0.94 men per woman, and 100% of urban population. 17.33% of its inhabitants are under 10 years old, and 7.67% over 65.
