Paulo Jorge Gomes Bento (born June 20, 1969 in Lisbon), (pron. IPA: ['paulu 'bẽtu]), is currently the manager of Sporting Clube de Portugal. Bento is also a former footballer player whose position was defensive midfielder.
Paulo Bento played for Estrela da Amadora, Vitória de Guimarães, Benfica and Real Oviedo, before moving to Sporting Clube de Portugal, where he finished his career as a player.
He had 35 caps for the Portugal's team, since his first game, on January 15, 1992, in a 0-0 draw with Spain, to his last one, the 0-1 loss to South Korea, on June 14, 2002, in the 2002 Football World Cup finals. He also played at Euro 2000 where, along with teammates Abel Xavier and Nuno Gomes, he was suspended (in Bento's case for 5 months) due to bad behaviour, during the semi-final loss with France.
Bento finished his career aged 35, in 2004. After an emotional retirement, he got the job of Sporting Lisbon's youth team coach. He won the junior championship in 2005, and developed a base to the future. After the sacking of José Peseiro, midway through 2005-06, he was called to be main coach of Sporting, leading the Lions to a second place in 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons. He also won the Portuguese Cup and the SuperCup Cândido de Oliveira in 2007.
In 2007, Bento signed a two-year contract-extension. Using the former experience in the youth team, he began building a strong squad using players from Sporting's famed youth academy. He is considered by many as one of the most promising managers in Portugal, due to his strong leadership and tactical knowledge.
In 2008, and after a very irregular season, Bento managed to lead Sporting to an unprecedented 3rd consecutive qualification for the UEFA Champions League by finishing 2nd in the Portuguese League. In the same season, he also retained the Portuguese Cup, beating three-times champions FCPorto in the final after knocking out eternal rivals SLBenfica in the last four in an epic encounter (final score 5-3). Bento came within heavy pressure from the supporters and media during the season, with Sporting spending many weeks below 3rd place in the league table. Nevertheless, a strong finish by Sporting, with 5 consecutive victories in the final 5 matches, allowed them to leapfrog their rivals in the League and to secure silverware once more. In the process, Bento's team broke a number of long-standing club records, including the first season without home defeats since 1987, the first capture of back-to-back Portuguese Cups since 1974 and the first time ever that Sporting finished three consecutive seasons in 2nd place (Sporting not having achieved three consecutive top-two finishes since 1962). At the age of 38, Bento also became only the 5th manager in the history of Portuguese football to win back-to-back Portuguese cups (alongside legends such as Janos Biri, John Mortimore or Jose Maria Pedroto).
