My editing strategy is generally to find a good reference source and mine it for whatever it contains that can be used to improve articles. This is a partial list of the books I've used.
- Braunbehrens, Volkmar (1990) Mozart in Vienna
- Deutsch, Otto Erich (1965) Mozart: A Documentary Biography
- Eisen, Cliff and Simon P. Keefe, eds. (2006) The Cambridge Mozart Encyclopedia, Cambridge University Press.
- Geiringer, Karl, in collaboration with Irene Geiringer (3rd ed., 1982) Haydn: A Creative Life in Music. Berkeley: University of California Press.
- Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians
- Hubbard, Frank (1967) Three Centuries of Harpsichord Making. Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press.
- Pollens, Stewart (1995) The Early Pianoforte. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press.
- Robbins Landon, H. C. and David Wyn Jones (1988) Haydn: His Life and Music, Thames and Hudson.
- Rosen, Charles (1997) The Classical Style. New York: Norton.
- Solomon, Maynard (1995) Mozart: A Life
- Webster, James and Georg Feder (2002) The New Grove Haydn. New York: Macmillan.
In my earlier days on the Wikipedia (ca. 2003-2005), I didn't always edit out of books, and often just went with what was in my memory. I'm happier now with the current procedure, which I think produces more accurate results.
