[edit] Plot summary
John Cusack plays Hoops McCann, recent high school grad who failed to get a basketball scholarship, disappointing his parents. Hoops hopes to be admitted to the Rhode Island School of Design, and must write and illustrate a love story for his application. He joins his friend George Calamari (Joel Murray) and George's sister Squid to spend the summer on the island of Nantucket, Massachusetts. En route, they pick up a young rock singer named Cassandra Eldridge (Demi Moore); she is being chased by a motorcycle gang at the time. Once on the island, Hoops and George, along with George's island friends the Stork twins and Ack-Ack Raymond (son of a Marine), must help Cassandra save her grandfather's house from the greedy Beckersted Family. Along the way, Hoops must find a way to write his cartoon love story.

[edit] Trivia
- During one of the montage scenes which illustrates Hoops' journey from Generic, New York to Woods Hole, Massachusetts, an overhead shot shows his car traveling along a freeway. However, not only was the freeway chosen for the shot the Mid-Cape Highway section of U.S. Highway 6 on Cape Cod, a road he would not have traveled on to get to Woods Hole from New York, but the car was traveling westbound on the highway crossing Bass River, which serves as the Dennis/Yarmouth town line, which is approximately 25 miles east-north-east of Woods Hole.
- Sometimes described as "Better Off Dead goes to the beach", due to the same director and several returning cast members (Cusack, Armstrong, Negron) from the classic '80s comedy. Additionally, Hoops and Lane Meyer are both cartoonists.
- One of the names they used for a character in the movie was Ack. The name Ack is the IATA code for Nantucket Memorial Airport.
- The grandparents home is actually in Megansett, MA (North Falmouth), not Nantucket. The home was not destroyed during the filming, and the owner got it repainted for free.
- Several scenes were filmed in Sandwich, Massachusetts- including the beach scene with the scouts and the bar scene (inside) where Demi performs.
- Bobcat wears a Godzilla suit where he ends up accidentally destroying a miniature suburban town
- Several scenes where filmed in Hyannisport. The Generic High School (Hyannis West High) and Generic Elementary (Hyannis West Middle school). Hyannis west Middle
