Old Trafford Metrolink station is located on Warwick Road and Elsinore Road and serves Firswood, Old Trafford and Stretford. As it is adjacent to Lancashire County Cricket Club and only a short walk from the Manchester United Stadium, Old Trafford Station regularly faces heavy usage especially as matches and concerts mean big crowds. Crowd control operations often involve the use of turnstiles.

[edit] History

A station here was opened by the Manchester South Junction and Altrincham Railway (MSJAR) just north of the present station between 5 May 1857 and 17 October 1857 as Exhibition to serve the Manchester Art Treasures Exhibition. Adapted and reopened in 1862 for use every year thereafter on match days only as Cricket Ground. Opened for Royal Agriculture Society Exhibition in 1869. Opened between May 1887 and October 1887 with new platforms for Royal Jubilee Exhibition. Operated as a four-platform station from 1887 until 1963. Continued to open on match days only as Cricket Ground (Old Trafford) until 1910 when it became Cricket and Football Grounds following the opening of Manchester United's ground. Renamed Warwick Road on 11 May 1931 and open daily following the electrification of the MSJAR. Also referred to as Warwick Road (Old Trafford) on early tickets, timetables, etc.. Closed as a British Rail station on 24 December 1991. Reopened as a Metrolink station on 15 June 1992.
