OK Tyr
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
OK Tyr is an orienteering club in Karlstad. In membership numbers it is one of the larger orienteering clubs in Sweden. The club was formed in 1936. The name was not, as may be thought, derived directly from the Norse god Tyr. One of the founding members, Anders Forsell, was inspired by a Canadian book featuring a bear called Tyr. A bear is a prominent feature of the club's logotype to this day.
At the end of the 1980s and for most of the 1990s OK Tyr was also one of the most successful orienteering clubs in Scandinavia. In 1989 Tyr won Tiomila for the first time. The following year saw victories in Tiomila again and the Swedish relay championships. In 1991 the club won the premier British relay, JK Trophy, for the third consecutive year, while the women's team won Siljanskavlen. Other major relay titles were SmÄlandskavlen in 1992, O-Festivalen in 1994 and JK Trophy 1998.
The club house, Tyrstugan, is situated 5km to the north of Karlstad, with access to forest and sawdust trails for training. In addition Tyr has around 30 maps available in the vicinity of Karlstad for training and competitions.
Tyr organizes annual races Propagandan, Minifemdagars and LĂ„ngen och Korten. Training races, V65, are held weekly during the orienteering season. Tyr has been one of the hosting clubs for the O-Ringen (1976 and 1996), Swedish Championships 2003 and Nordic Meeting 2005.
