[edit] History

The town began to take off at the beginning of the 20th century and many businesses, homes, and streets were built about this time. Oak Grove owes much of its initial growth to the fact that a street car line went down the middle of the town and the Oregon Trail finished a few miles away in Oregon City. Some of the campfire burns from the wagon trains are still visible on the trees. The street car line went from Portland to Oregon City but closed in the 1950s. Some of the tracks used to be visible on Arista Drive, but they are still visible on a nature trail and a pillar from an old stop is visible outside the current Oak Grove School. Oak Grove School was originally built in 1907 but it burned down about 20 years later.

A school was erected in the 1930s with an addition in the 1960s. In the sixties, another school was built was known as North Oak Grove. Oak Grove school was closed in 1999 and all the students shifted to North Oak Grove which was thereafter known as Oak Grove. The former Oak Grove school is still used by the district as a charter school for gifted students and one for bilingual education in Spanish and English. The downtown of Oak Grove began to die in the 1950s when McLoughlin was built as a major thoroughfare and directed the business and traffic away. Many stores sit along the street and it is known as a very important shopping area for Clackamas County. One of the famous sites along McLoughlin used to be the Holly Farm. This farm sent holly around the world for Christmas time and was paved over and replaced with the Holly Farm Mall.

Oak Grove often receives attempts by the city of Milwaukie, Oregon to annex it and turn it into a part of Milwaukie. This has always been rebuffed by Oak Grove and the area currently remains unincorporated. The regional government Metro tried to increase the population density of the area and had plans to raise the population of Oak Grove from 12,000 to 60,000. This did not appeal to the area's residents who raised questions about where all the people would go and whether the ground could take all this extra infrastructure since Oak Grove was formerly a swamp.
