It was established before 1258 by Boleslaus the Chaste, and used to be an important trade and political center. Since 15th century, the general sejmik of Lesser Poland was held there. Since 17th century, the town has gone into decline and lost its city rights in 1869. Up until the Second World War, the village had a large Jewish community, which perished in the Holocaust.
