[edit] Usage

 • PAGENAME should be the name of the page where the copyright violation has occurred. It will be used in links, so it should be the full page title.
 • SOURCEURL should be the full URL of the source from which the content was taken. It will be used in an external link, so it should be the full URL, including "http://".

[edit] Name

Can't we call ths something shorter? at the current time template:copy doesn't exist.Geni 22:23, 17 September 2005 (UTC)

I am open to a better name. "Copy" to my mind would suggest a template used in making a copy. The current warning template for regualr copyvios is nothanks. I named this to indiacate that it was the speedy deletion (SD) veraion of that template. I am not wedded to that name, however, and I welcome any suggestions for improved names, as i said in the proosal discussion when i firat put this draft tempalte forward. DES (talk) 22:29, 17 September 2005 (UTC)
Agreement that the name is not very good. However most alternatives I'm able to come up with are also not very good, or already existing. (Viol,Violation, Nocopies, Cutpaste, DontCopy) Zanaq 07:48, 25 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Wording

 • Thank you, and please continue contributing to Wikipedia.

It sounds a bit over-eager, and maybe even sarcastic in the light of the text preceding it. I propose changing it to something like: Thank you, and feel free to continue contributing to Wikipedia. Zanaq 07:48, 25 September 2005 (UTC)

 • I think I copiesd that bit from {{tl|nothanks} or somewhere similer. i was trying to say "we object to this content, but not to you" in the spirit of "not biting the newbies". But I don't object to the changed wording. DES (talk) 13:29, 25 September 2005 (UTC)
Yes, It looks more friendly this way. ;-) -- Zanaq 17:01, 26 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Already deleted

Is there an admin version of this template? It doesn't make sense for me to be telling people their page "has been tagged for deletion" if I'm already in the process of deleting it. Angela. 07:27, 22 October 2005 (UTC)

That would be useful - perhaps create it at nothanks-speedied?

[edit] WP:AFC

I've created nothanks-afc based on this template, for use when the copyvio was posted to the Wikipedia:Articles for creation page. It needs a bit of work though. Thryduulf 17:36, 9 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Formatting issues

Someone made the tempalte into a single paragrpah starting with # as if it were to be an item in a numbered list. In my experience, this tmeplate is usually put in a section of its own on a user talk page. Therefore this formamttign is IMO inappropriate. Also Wikipedia is the title of a publication (The encyclopedia) and so should be in italics just as Britinicana would be. DES (talk) 15:27, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

Ther is also, IMO, no good reason for "HTML paragraphs" or other HTML markup for what mediawiki markup already does just fine. DES (talk) 17:58, 12 January 2006 (UTC)
(Yay, edit conflict.) That someone being me, I didn't convert the template into a single paragraph at all. The wiki parse engine ends a list item before any double-space, so that normally this template will break any list it's placed into. I've now edited it to use HTML paragraphs, which are the end-result of wiki-doublespaces without that unfortunate glitch/feature. The HTML comments emulate wiki-doublespaces so that the template is easily readable in edit view, but don't break lists. This way, the template can be used alone or directly into a list without the need to go back and fix it after subst'ing. As for the numbered list syntax, I recognize now that it was a bad idea and I'm in the process of removing those. // Pathoschild 17:59, 12 January 2006 (UTC)
I see. While I think thois would not and should not usually be used as part of a list, i can see that it might sometimes be so used. I will revert my reversion. DES (talk) 18:02, 12 January 2006 (UTC)
Actually, "Wikipedia" without italics is the standard on Main Page, Wikipedia, and Wikipedia:Template messages/User talk namespace. Melchoir 19:26, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Use on Images

Please remember that this tempalte is also for use wit images. I used it the other day and it put in the image instead of linking to it! I think :Image:Image.jpg should fix that but I don't know if it well mess up the article usage so I didn't change it yet. Flying Canuck 17:44, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Fix request

I have fixed the problem immediately above but there is another.: The link to the talk page does not link to an image talk page. It currently reads {pg}}}}. It should somehow read [[Image talk:.... I expect there is an easy way to get the namespace from the parameter - if anyone know how to fix it - thanks. -- zzuuzz (talk) 21:26, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Section header

Anyway somebody could work this template to automatically create an appropriate section header?--NMajdantalk 17:23, 4 January 2007 (UTC)

I went ahead and added one. If there was a previous reason for not having one that I am unaware of, feel free to revert.--NMajdantalk 18:51, 4 January 2007 (UTC)
Gah, it is so annoying to have to memorize which templates have automatic headers and which don't, and now I have to start all over. See Wikipedia_talk:Criteria_for_speedy_deletion#CSD_templates for discussion on the issue. NickelShoe (Talk) 19:34, 4 January 2007 (UTC)
Right now, there is a header, but it's rather useless (only says "Copyright problems"). I suggest it be made to include the page name of the infringing image/page. Superm401 - Talk 02:29, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Corollary

I think the first sentence should read:

Concerning your contribution, :{pg}, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from either web sites or printed material without the permission of the author.

without emphasis, of course. Just to make it clear the person holding the copyright can submit their own work/give permission. Any objections? -- Thesocialistesq/M.lesocialiste 05:51, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

Change made. -- Thesocialistesq/M.lesocialiste 21:37, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Matching other warning templates

I just had occasion to use this template, and was surprised to discover that it did not contain a red warning icon like so many of the other CSD warning templates ... since I added a bunch of them, what's one more? Happy Editing! —72.75.72.63 (talk · contribs) 03:13, 29 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Edit link in talk pages

Why is the edit section in talk pages where this template is used linked to the template itself? Normally I click on the edit link for each section to go to just that section in my talk page so I can to blank it.--Rtphokie (talk) 12:05, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
