North American B-25 Survivors highlights the history of many well known flying and static displayed B-25 Mitchells in the United States. A list is also provided of other B-25s on display around the world; including location, model and serial numbers, brief history, nicknames/markings, and conditions.

[edit] Background

In August 1945, when the last B-25J rolled of the North American assembly line in Fairfax Kansas, 9,817 had been accepted for service. 72 of the brand new aircraft were rejected by the USAAF and were flown directly to storage at Altus, Oklahoma. Unlike many other aircraft built for WWII, the B-25 was to remain in service with both the post war USAAF and USAF for another 18 years, the last official flight being in December 1963 (aircraft 44-30761).

While technically the B-25 was an obsolete design, it had numerous strong points, which made its continued usefulness invaluable. The airframe was a proven design, large enough to be readily modified, notably stable flight characteristics and relatively uncomplicated to maintain.

The initial batch of B-25s released by the RFC (Reconstruction Finance Corporation) were the older, worn out models (B-25C, B-25D, B-25H). The US Navy also retired a majority of their PBJ-1s including almost new PBJ-1J. The Air Force decided to retain a majority of the B-25Js for future use.

Postwar, the aircraft had all combat systems removed and were redesignated TB-25J. While this designation was specific to them being used as a training aircraft, others were also used as test-beds and transports. As multi-engine trainers was the primary training role, in 1950 Hughes Aircraft modified some aircraft as Radar Fire Control Trainers. Depending on the type of electronics installed, these aircraft either were designated TB-25K (Hughes E-1 system – 117 aircraft) or TB-25M (Hughes E-5 system – 40 aircraft).

In 1950, the USAF also awarded a second contract to Hayes Aircraft to remanufacture some aircraft to advanced multi-engine trainers. Some of these modifications included new windshields, engine exhaust modifications, improved instruments, updated electrical systems, additional passenger seating as well as soundproofing & heating systems. Hayes produced 124 B-25Ls & 112 B-25Ns.

It was also in 1950 that the RCAF approached the USAF to purchase B-25Ns as advance trainers. These aircraft remained in Canadian service until 1961.

The other ex-military sources were Venezuela, which operated their first B-25 in 1947 and continued flying the aircraft in a military role until early 1980. Other South American operators included Brazil and the Dominican Republic. Indonesia also continued using the B-25 until the late 1970s with numerous examples being on display in that country.

Both China and the former Soviet Union continued using ex-lend-lease B-25 (NATO call name "Bank") as trainers, as well as cargo aircraft until the middle 1970s. In both countries, numerous airframes (of various versions) are reported to still exist

In 1957, the USAF started releasing the almost brand new, recently updated aircraft from storage at Davis-Monthan AFB. Unlike many other surplus aircraft, these B-25 quickly found a home on the used aircraft market. A vast majority were bought for use by either agricultural sprayer or air tanker companies. From this pool came nearly all of the surviving aircraft.

These agricultural sprayer or air tanker aircraft companies had a very short life. The US Forest Service after a biased test in 1961, banned all B-25s from further contract with the USFS after the 1962 season. This effectively put numerous companies out of service. It should be noted that in both Canada as well as Alaska (with the Federal Bureau of Land Management), the B-25 continued in service as an air tanker until 1992. These operations enjoyed a respectable and commendable safety record during their use. As an agricultural sprayer, its use was extremely short lived – while numerous aircraft were modified to this capacity, public outcry against large scale spraying quickly doomed this venture within less than 2 years of being initiated.

Another use for the airframes was as executive transports, cargo transport or research test aircraft. The B-25 was a very popular choice for the same reasons that the USAF continued using them: bigger airframe, ease of maintenance and a very stable aircraft. Another use for these aircraft was as an aerial camera platform, with several aircraft still in use today.

The first big break for the B-25 was in 1968, for the film Catch-22. 18 aircraft were obtained for filming. In June 1970, after the movie was released, 13 of the remaining aircraft were sold. This film helped preserve numerous airframes that could easily have been scrapped - of the aircraft used in the film, 15 (possibly 16) are still preserved today. Another major feature film was Hanover Street which used five aircraft.

In the late 1970s, the warbird movement started in earnest - with numerous examples of B-25s remaining, they quickly became the majority of the flyable ex-WWII bombers on the airshow circuit. As with all remaining warbirds, collectors began scouring the world for forgotten aircraft, from the jungles of New Guinea to the wilderness of Alaska. Collectors sought unrestorable wrecked airframes, some of which are being recovered and restored for both static display and airworthy exhibition.
