[edit] Size

Valuev's great stature and weight is probably due to Acromegalic gigantism.

Notice his very rough and defined brow ridge, cheekbones, and fissured skin on the scalp. All of these symptoms are consistent with Acromegaly.

If that were so would it not be very dangerous for him to box? since i believe gigantism is caused by a pituitary disorder in the brain.

Was it dangerous for Goliath as a champion soldier?

To answer your question: with acromegaly he could have potential heart problems, joint problems, diabetes, and internal organ complications in the future. Men like him traditionally don't live beyond their 50's. Still, while he is strong and young, he could have several years of good boxing left in him.

  • For the record, the oldest giant I am aware of was the 7 ft 8 inch, 365 lb, Johann Petursson of Iceland. He lived to the ripe old age of 72 years.

Reply: A height of 7'2" does not in and of itself indicate any sort of medical abnormality, it's not even that unusual in Montenegro and (according to my hairdresser) parts of Russia. I never thought that I'd play "the tall card" but I'm 6'9" and I've got a bit of a problem with your baseless speculation that Valuev is deformed. Very tall men and women tend to have more testosterone (which influences many aspects of growth), stretch mark scars and eyes that appear to be abnormally small relative to other facial features. Other unusual aspects of his appearance could easily be explained by his decade long boxing career.

As for your Goliath question, the Dead Sea Scrolls have recently revealed that contemporary claims about his height are greatly exaggerated, he was only 6'7".

EDIT: I have to sign these things don't I

Dude, he could be like 6'3 2000 years ago and still count as a giant. Human height has increased very, very rapidly, far more rapidly than any evolutionary process. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 142.179.73.188 (talk) 04:32, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

Reply: You should also take into account the fact that Earth's population is slowly increasing in height. Therefore, in regards to old stories, their frame of reference was a much lower average height. See the wikipedia article on Human Height for more info.

[edit] Valuev is 7 feet 2

I've read that he is actually 7 feet 2 inches.

[might be including his shoes though]

---

the story is that his promoter claims it would be too hard to get him fights if they were honest about his height, and claims he is actually closer to 7'3

[edit] Why remove Klitschko?

I thought Vitali Klitscho had some relevance because he too was another successful heavyweight boxer in the same weight and height range as Valuev.

Reply: Well, Klitschko is a different fighter, from a different country, and holder of a different belt. If we add here a link to Klitschko, then we might as well add a list of all successful heavies, not just him, right?

[edit] Not tallest

He is the tallest heavyweight champion ever, but not the tallest pro fighter ever. See Here. Search for John Rankin or Ewart Potgieter.

[edit] No contest

Any ideas, what happened there? Why the decision>??

---

from an interview with Andreas Sidon (the opponent he had the NC against) translated into english from german through a translation site

"At that time this was in Prague only my second professional fight. The Fight was attached on six rounds. Valuev brought in the early stage immediately a few heavy hits in the purpose, so that I became angezählt. However, all in all, I have put away the first passageways quite well and became stronger. Then in the third round the referee stopped the discussion without clearly evident reason and wanted to finish the fight. However, the spectators were anything but contented with the decision and felt cheated around her entrance fee. The situation seemed to escalate, objects, as for example champagne bottles and beer mugs, flew in the ring. As a result I appealed to Valuev, nevertheless, he should go weiterboxen. Then he also did this. And thus we continued the discussion, partially without referees. Valuev seemed to have konditionell problems, however, the rounds were finished partly too early, so that Valuev for the time could escape."

"No winner was announced. The EBU (European Boxing union) evaluated meeting later without evaluation than " No contest "."

[edit] Why isn't his Jan 20th 2007 fight being shown in the US?

How did boxing get so messed up that we don't even have a chance to see the fight? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 209.206.165.28 (talk) 22:45, 18 January 2007 (UTC).

[edit] Childish behaviour by some editors

Who deleted all his biography and pre-professional career details I added before? I re-read the article yesterday and now it's full of pro-American, anti-Valuev, russophobe garbage like saying his win over Ruiz was "Controversial" and also my addition in trivia about that he never lost in his carreer and was never nocked down is also gone! Grow up you morons! You are just jelous of Kolya's success! Also the Pan-Asian title is NOT "Lowly regarded"!

                                              Sergei

Ok, but, first of all, whoever you are, do not call people morons, we may mistakes some time, by accident and do not mean to make mistakes. Remember that I corrected a lot of things here, ruiz fight is generally accepted as controversial. Also I do not like when people attack Valuev, he has good heart, soul and all, but he is not that great. Boxingwear

[edit] Just don't want to get into editing wars...

I agree offcourse... I just don't want to get into pointless editing wars, that's all: those can be VERY long and VERY annoying! As far as Valuev not being a good boxer: the guy is UNDEFEATED, 46-0; is on his way to beat Rocky Marciano's 49-0 record; hasn't yet been even nocked down, let alone nocked out; won the WBA Heavyweight Championship, defended it 4 times, winning all for by either a KO, or a TKO; is going to defend the championship a 5th time against Chagaev, hopefully will win, no I'm sure he'll win; and he even wrote a book of his own. What else does he have to do and accomplish to prove to you that he IS a good boxer?!

                                                     Sergei

What is his ethnicity? Is he Slavic Russian or is he Tatar? I read somewhere he was Tatar? Is this true?

He's 1/4 Tatar, 3/4 Slavic Russian.

                                   Sergei

Well Sergei, he is of tatar origins, that means he is somewhat asian. That's where he gets his strong head bones from (i think). Russian is Slavic and vice versa.

He's 1/4 Tatar and 3/4 Russian. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.181.160.46 (talk) 12:12, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Marciano's record

The opening para mentions Marciano's 49-0 record but surely talk about that is irrelevant until Valuev holds the undisputed heavyweight crown? --LiamE 20:52, 14 April 2007 (UTC)

Well that doesn't really matter now does it? --LiamE 22:49, 14 April 2007 (UTC)

It does not matter, but keep in mind, he was 46-0, not 49-0. Assuming he survived this fight, he could have been 49-0 in 6 months. Within one year he could have taken on 3 easy opponents before fighting anybody of importance. 50-0 was no problem.

Interesting trivia: The fight started on 4/14, finished on 4/15. I keep on wondering. If Valuev was 46-0-1 today, 50-0 was just around the corner. (User talk:Foremanfan)

[edit] Fight against Ruiz and title match against Chagaev

It says in the article,

"His next fight will be against John Ruiz, whom he defeated to take the WBA title. The winner will face Chagaev in Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, on 5th December 2007."

I never did see either of these matches. What happened, did he win? --24.87.7.43 (talk) 23:16, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

I don't know who wrote that part, but he is ACTUALLY, going to face Sergei Liakhovich for the #1 Contendership. It is going to go down in January, 2008.--24.87.7.43 (talk) 07:29, 8 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Not second largest fighter in combat sports

He is surpassed by Hong Man Choi AND Bob Sapp —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.181.123.162 (talk) 00:38, 31 December 2007 (UTC)

Nope: Sapp is only 6'5". Nikolai is 7'1". --User:142.33.185.2. 00:29, 6 January 2008 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by SergeiXXX (talkcontribs)

[edit] cleaned up some language

I edited a section about his rematch with the guy who beat him because it sounded unproffessional and not like an encyclopedia. Iremoved the phrase "get his revenge", and made it a little more professional —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.97.55.186 (talk) 01:03, 10 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Chagaev-Valuev II

I do believe, the rematch has been postponed. Chagaev has picked a virul infection. GoodDay (talk) 19:02, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
