[edit] Route description
[edit] Albany County
NY 158 begins 1.5 miles east of the village of Altamont at NY 146, 1.25 miles west of the hamlet of Guilderland Center. The route heads northwesterly, curving to near northerly before passing over the western edge of the Watervliet Reservoir and crossing US 20. Continuing northward, it is known as Guilderland Road.[2]
[edit] Schenectady County
Shortly after entering the county, NY 158 meets the eastern terminus of NY 406, after which it narrows and has several steep curves. Passing over a railway and the Thruway, it becomes Guilderland Avenue, entering a residential area plus another railroad underpass. It then ends at NY 7 at Curry Road in Rotterdam. Guilderland Avenue continues into the city of Schenectady from that intersection.[2]
[edit] History
Route 158 was assigned to the routing from Altamont to downtown Schnectady along Guilderland Avenue in the 1930s.[3] Route 158 was truncated back to New York State Route 7 during a maintainence swap in 1980. The segment in downtown Schencetady was replaced by Schenectady County Route 160.[4]
