[edit] Route description
Route 56 begins at NJ 77 in Upper Deerfield Township. Shortly after it begins, it intersects County Route 611. It proceeds east, soon intersecting County Route 553, County Route 687 and County Route 645. It then intersects County Route 737, and then County Route 634. It then intersects County Route 717, and County Route 658. Traveling eastward, it intersects Route 55. It soon becomes concurrent with County Route 622 before intersecting County Route 628, before reaching its end at Route 47.[2]
[edit] History
Route 56 also was a proposed route in Ocean County, until it was created west of Route 55 in 1983, and east of Route 55 in 1987. Route 56 was formerly Salem County Route 622. Before the 1953 renumbering, 56 was multiplexed with Route 30 east of Route 157. This was designated in 1948 from former County Route 21, and became part of Route 43 before the 1953 renumbering.[3]
Due to a nor'easter in April 2007, the Rainbow Lake Bridge in Pittsgrove Township was washed out. This led to major detours for traffic traveling between Vineland and Bridgeton. The bridge spanning the Maurice River, which connects Vineland and Pittsgrove Township, was closed in June 2006 for planned repairs, further impeding cross-county traffic between Vineland and Bridgeton. Repairs for both bridges were completed by the end of 2007.
