New Deal Movement

The New Deal Movement (NDM) is a political party in Liberia. The organization of the party was officially declared in June 1999 in Monrovia. A few months following that, an organizing congress dubbed as the "Two-Century Congress" was held in Monrovia from December 30, 1999 thru January 1, 2000. Those elected by the founding congress of the New DEAL Movement to spearhead and/or consummate the formation of the party as a legal political party in Liberia included the following:
1. Alaric K. Tokpa -- National Chairman 2. Nigba Wiaplah -- Vice Chairman for National Affairs 3. Dougbeh C. Nyan -- Vice Chairman for International Affairs (elected at 2nd Congress in 2002) 4. J. Kerkula Foeday -- National General Secretary 5. Nathaniel Capehart -- Assistant General Secretary 6. George Caine -- National Treasurer 7. P. Augustine Miller-- Financial Secretary
After intensive work of mobilization and recruitment of members for two and half years,the party was duly accredited as a national political party of Liberia by the National Elections Commission on July 23, 2002. With this accreditation, the New DEAL Movement was able to participate in the 2005 General and Presidential elections of Liberia. Its presidential and vice presidential nominees at the time were Professor George Klay Kieh, Jr. and Alaric K. Tokpa respectively. The party and its leaders intend to improve Liberia by instituting a number of social, political ,and policy reforms, which many observers agree are much needed. The New DEAL Movement intends to foster, promote, and maintain good governance in Liberia by creating effective, democratic, social-service institutions; by stabilizing Liberia's historically woeful politics and economy, and by reconciling the many factions that currently exist in post-war-ravaged Liberia.
Other goals of the New DEAL Movement in line with its vision for Liberia include the resettlement of people from displaced and refugee camps, the streamlining of the government, including most especially the downsizing of Liberia's bloated bureaucracy, with a plan to reduce the number of government ministries from 23 to 13. The overarching goal of the New DEAL Movement is to create and maintain a social democratic society, where addressing the plights of average Liberians and boosting a quality life for all Liberians shall be paramount policy considerations by the government. This underscores one of the fundamental principles of the New DEAL: social justice. The New DEAL believes in and shall always seek and promote social justice.
The New Deal Movement, also known as the New Democratic Alternative for Liberia Movement, as its third elected National Chairman, T. Wilson Gaye, rightly observes, is a party of equality as it relates to the treatment of all Liberians.
In the 2005 General and Presidential Elections, the presidential candidate of the Party, George Klay Kieh, Jr. won 0.5% of the votes, while the Party won three seats in the House of Representatives.
