National University (NU) is an accredited, private university based in San Diego, California with 28 regional campuses located throughout the state and one in Nevada. Roughly 22,000 full-time undergraduate and graduate students are currently enrolled.[1]. The university was founded in 1971, and is the second-largest private nonprofit university in the state of California.[2] With 12,907 graduate students officially listed, National University ranks above all other institutions of higher education except University of Phoenix (40,432 enrolled) and Nova Southeastern University (13,717 enrolled). University of Southern California and Pennsylvania State University round out the nation's five largest graduate programs, with enrollment figures of 11,322 and 10,646 respectively. In 2008, the university boasted 3 alumni as having received recognition as California Teacher of the Year by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction.[3]

According to figures released in 2007 by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC), National University has prepared more candidates for teaching credentials than any other university in California over the past seven years.[4]

According to data from the eighth annual report of the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) released on November 5, 2007, NU has surpassed nationwide benchmarks measuring the level of academic educational standards at four-year colleges and universities six years in a row.[5]

In 2006, NU earned an Emmy award from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, Pacific Southwest Chapter, for its "One University" commercial.[6]

In 2002, NU received a "Baby Baldrige" Eureka Award from the California Council for Excellence, and repeated this honor in 2003.[2]

National University is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC),[7] one of six official academic bodies responsible for the accreditation of public and private universities, colleges, secondary and elementary schools in the United States.

NU is organized into five schools and one college; The School of Business and Management; The School of Education; The School of Engineering and Technology; The School of Health and Human Services; The School of Media and Communication; and The College of Arts and Sciences.[1] Students can earn associate, bachelor, master, and specialist degrees. The university offers 100 undergraduate and graduate degrees, as well as 16 teacher credential and certificate programs. It offers more than 100 graduate and undergraduate degree programs and over 300 courses.[2]
