NASCAR Thunder 2002 is a racing simulator video game developed by EA Tiburon and published by EA Sports that came out for the PlayStation, Playstation 2, and Xbox. It is the fifth game in the NASCAR series of video games, and is the first of the series to have a new title (The other games simply read "NASCAR" and then the year). Notably, it is the first NASCAR game to feature alternate paint schemes on the cars. It featured the 2001 NASCAR Winston Cup Champion Jeff Gordon on its cover.

- Dale Earnhardt was cut from the game after his death on February 18, 2001, and various tributes to him appear throughout the game.
- This is the first console NASCAR game to feature a full field of 43 cars racing on the track at once.
- Benny Parsons played the game as his NBC Pontiac to show viewers the track layout on NASCAR on NBC telecasts.
- The PS2 and Xbox version features the song "Sweet Home Alabama" by Lynyrd Skynyrd because the game creator, EA Sports, had just announced sponsorship in the fall Talladega race.
- This is the first NASCAR game to include Ryan Newman.
- Drivers Ricky Craven & Dave Blaney are absent in this game..
- Often at Martinsville, the computer has the ability to "slingshot" past other drivers.
- This is the first NASCAR game to feature Busch series drivers.
- Ryan Newman and Jeff Green race full time in season mode. In reality, Newman ran 6 races and Green ran 8 races.
- This was the first console NASCAR game to include Dodges.
- This was the first NASCAR game to feature a day to night transition at every night race. This feature was removed in NASCAR 2005: Chase for the Cup and did not reappear until the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of NASCAR 08 but in that game only certain tracks will change from day to night.
- Occasionally, Busch Series cars with the same numbers as Cup cars start in the same race. Additionally, Jeff Green and Michael Waltrip may start twice in the same event, in both their Busch and Cup cars.
- If you look closly on Rusty Wallace's car on the cover of the game, you can see a Miller Lite logo.
