Greatest Hits: My Prerogative is the first greatest hits album by pop singer Britney Spears. The album was released on November 1, 2004 in Japan, on November 8, 2004 around the world and on November 9, 2004 in the United States and Canada.

The set includes most of Spears' hit singles, from "...Baby One More Time" to "Outrageous", and almost everything in between. Included are three new songs; a cover of Bobby Brown's "My Prerogative" (which was featured as the lead single and has gone on to be an international number-one hit), and two previously unreleased songs entitled "Do Somethin'" (which was later released as a single) and "I've Just Begun (Having My Fun)", the latter of which also appeared on the In the Zone DVD.

Rumors abounded that her record company were to release a greatest hits at the end of 2004 in early March, around the time of the massive success of "Toxic." The album was officially announced later on in the year, with the UK leg of her label taking it upon themselves to launch a promotional campaign entitled "I Love Britney"; with badges, T-shirts, bags and CDs being sent out to promote the album (such a collage appears in the liner notes, with the album cover included as well), and an exhibition at a London art gallery officially launching the album in the UK.

Bobby Brown, original performer of "My Prerogative", has worked with Spears before as an assistant engineer on her previous smash hit album "Oops!...I Did It Again." Spears also wrote additional lyrics for the song (the spoken part at the start), but is not credited normally.

On February 16, 2007 the compilation was re-printed in Europe in the low-priced budget card pack format, with the liner notes made from recycled paper. In it, one of the new songs, "I've Just Begun (Having My Fun)", accidentally has the "My" removed from the title.

[edit] Limited Edition

The limited edition of the album was printed in a digipak, wherein its cover is the same as the standard edition, but the colors look darker because of the shining effect. There is a collage of all of Britney's albums and singles covers in the limited edition. It also contains a second disc with unreleased remixes and the Chris Cox Megamix (see below for track listing).

[edit] Significance

Greatest Hits: My Prerogative was released only a mere five years after Spears first released ...Baby One More Time. While it is somewhat common for artists to release compilations after four studio albums (compare with Madonna's The Immaculate Collection), Spears released her hits album before she turned 23 years old. This age is considered young for an artist to release a greatest hits album (compare with LeAnn Rimes Greatest Hits).

[edit] Album design

The album's liner notes, in addition to the aforementioned collage, contains snapshots of Spears in her music videos. The inside front and back covers also have a "Poster Choice", with various shots of Spears throughout her career, symbolizing the transition she underwent between the releases of her second and third albums.

[edit] Track listing

Only the UK edition provides a complete compilation of all the singles released in that country. The Australian release omits "From the Bottom of My Broken Heart" (it is replaced by the Europe-only single, "Born to Make You Happy"); the European release omits "Don't Let Me Be the Last to Know" (the Brazilian and French version also omitting "Anticipating," but including "I Love Rock 'n' Roll"), the American version omitting "From The Bottom Of My Broken Heart" and "Don't Let Me Be the Last to Know."

"From the Bottom of My Broken Heart" is excluded altogether from the album for reasons unknown.

[edit] References in pop culture

  • In the music video for Daft Punk's song "The Prime Time of Your Life", at least 2 minutes into the video there is a scene where a girl looks at herself in her bathroom mirror. In that scene, for a split second, if you look into the mirror a poster for "My Prerogative" is visible reflected in the mirror, except Spears' face is blocked out by a skull head.
