"Ancient Egyptian musicians are known to have played harps and flutes circa 4000 BC, and double clarinets and lyres from around 3500 BC."
In the absence of specific references and sources, I would question these early dates. The main article cites just one work - a Rough Guide!

[edit] Neglect of film music & classical music
Throughout the 20th century there was active production of film music and classical music (the latter to a lesser extent). Yet the article neglects both of these genres.Dogru144 01:13, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

User:Egyegy, please stop deleting the templates. The references that are at the botttom are obviously not quite enough. If you can provide a citation for many apparently baseless assertions in this article, then we should reconsider the templates. I will give you clear example of unsupported statements in here:
1. "As early as 4000 BC, ancient Egyptians were playing harps and flutes, as well as two indigenous instruments: the ney and the oud. Double clarinets and lyres were played from around 3500 BC, while percussion instruments were added to orchestras by 2000 BC." (Where do these dates come from?)
2. "Egyptian folk music, a direct descendant of ancient Egyptian music, ..." (Says who, where?!)
3. "The most popular Egyptian pop singers today are Mohamed Mounir, Moustafa Amar & Amr Diab" (According to whose criteria?)
4. "The liturgical music of the Coptic Church also constitutes an important element of Egyptian music and is said to have preserved many features of ancient Egyptian music." (any ref?)
User:Egyegy, I must ask you to understand that a book entitled "Partner of Poetry" does not appear as a very supportive one of these and many other statements. I did read the World Music book before and read it NOW again; I'm afraid it's not quite enough. And anyhow, the World Music volumes are not considered to be a reliable source anyway. Please put this in mind, and try to explain yourself in here, before attempting to revert again. You like WP's guidelines; then have a look on this please: Wikipedia:Citing sources. - You'll need to go through earch reference yourself, the rest of us are not here to do the legwork for you. The vast majority of articles on Wikipedia simply list references at the bottom, and they surely don't have a useless template asking for references already listed! If there's a questionable statement after consulting the references, there is an appropriate template to be used to check a specific statment for accuracy, not the whole article.
