[edit] School Life

Monmouth Academy has long been considered one of the best High Schools in Maine. Students at Monmouth Academy enjoy a wide variety of activities throughout the year, and are fourtunate to have such an outstanding staff. Each year the students participate in school activities such as scoop day, winter carnival, and spring fling. Community Day of Caring is also a major part of the school's effort to give back to thier town.

[edit] Sports

Monmouth Academy takes pride in their sports teams.

Wrestling Notable standouts of 2008 - Senior Mike Danforth State runner up at 130 pounds Junior Cody Guzman State runner up at 145 pounds Freshman Patrick McInnis 3rd at states at 103 pounds. They have an upcoming football team also.[citation needed]Cross country is a big sport at MA. It's a friendly sport that welcomes all stages of runners. Also involving running is the newly created track and field team. Coached by Mr. Tom Menendez, a Monmouth Middle School teacher, this team has done surprisingly well despite the conditions it was formed under. Being that the Academy lacks a track, the team practices in the parking lot. This proved to be enough, when two years in row team members placed in their different events at the MVC's - (Mountain Valley Conference Meet)

Every winter, Monmouth Academy puts on a Winter Carnival, taking place the day before Christmas vacation. On this date, freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors all compete for first place in a number of different activities. Such activities include musical chairs, Simon Says, tug of war, arm wrestling, frozen t-shirt contest, pie-eating contest, bobbing for apples, knockout, snow sculptures, leapfrog, and Academy Bowl. For each activity, the Monmouth Academy staff judges the participants from each class and awards points to first, second, third, and fourth place winners. Points aew also awarded for decorating your class' hallway. Each year individual classes get a theme for the competition. This also plays into the different dress up days, such as pj day, crazy hair day, mismatch day, spirit day, and theme day. The class with the most points at the end of the day wins the class trophy.

[edit] Seminar Week

A few weeks after the beginning of the school year, the last week in September to be precise, the freshmen, sophomore, junior, and senior classes of Monmouth Academy participate in an educational experience week, specifically designed for each class. These four programs are Project MOBY, Sophomore Awareness, Junior Leadership, and Senior Seminar.

[edit] Project MOBY

Project MOBY, an acronym for "My Own Back Yard," is a five-day, four-night educational camping trip for the Monmouth Academy Freshmen Class on Mount Desert Island in Acadia National Park during Seminar Week, the last week in September. During the trip, students hike among the mountains, swim, and perform campfire skits as they learn via experience skills in earth science, biology, history, geography, mythology, English, and art. Memorable events also include a whale watch and a Friday spent atop of Cadillac Mountain.

In 1988, Mr. Jeffrey DeBlois, currently a history and economics teacher at Monmouth Academy, was given a grant from the state of Maine to allow Project MOBY to occur. The Project began as a tradition in 1989, with DeBlois serving as project director. Mr. DeBlois still directs and attends Project MOBY to this day.
