Max Bemis (born April 6, 1984) is the lead singer and primary lyricist of the band Say Anything.
[edit] Early life
Max was born in New York City. He and his family moved to Los Angeles when he was a child. In Hollywood, his father was a small-scale film producer. His father's connections are what tied young Max into many small films such as Face/Off (although his part was so small his name wasn't listed in the credits). He was the baby model in the poster for the Coen Brothers' film Raising Arizona. He learned to play piano at a young age, which prompted his later interest in music. Max was born of Jewish descent and his father is Catholic[citation needed]. Themes of religious irreconcilability are prevalent in his lyrics. He suffers from bipolar disorder. He was diagnosed in 2005 after a nervous breakdown, shortly before the re-issue of …Is a Real Boy.
[edit] Music
Max met the future Say Anything drummer, Coby Linder, at Camp Ramah in Ojai, California. He met two other band members, Evan Span and Michael Levin, at the Windward School in Los Angeles, California. Say Anything was formed after Max wrote a few songs and coerced his friends into helping him play and distribute them. They spread through and became popular in the Los Angeles music scene, and the band began. The band started with Max on rhythm guitar and vocals, Evan Span on lead guitar, Coby Linder on drums, Josh Eichenstein bass, and Mike Levin first on Bass, then Guitar, then bass again. However, after the band produced its first album, Junior Varsity EP (four songs about high school), Evan Span left the band and Max took over guitar. In 2001, the band produced Baseball, which was 72 minutes long and well received. The band disbanded when Max left to go to college at Sarah Lawrence College in Yonkers, New York. Max became disenchanted with college life, however, and felt that his true path was music. The band reunited, this time consisting of Max, Coby Linder, and bassist Dan Delauro. They released Menorah\Majora together in 2003. They were signed to Doghouse Records in the following year. Written mostly by Max and co-produced by Tim O'Heir, Say Anything released their proper debut, …Is a Real Boy on August, 3 2004, under Doghouse records. The band was signed to J Records in 2005 and re-recorded their popular song "Alive with the Glory of Love", which describes Max's grandparents' survival of the Holocaust. Max has announced that his side project, Two Tongues, has completed an album. The band features bandmate Coby Linder and Saves the Day members Chris Conley and David Soloway which should be released later in 2008.[1] They have currently released one song on their myspace.
Max is featured prominently on Nightbeast's album "Inside Jokes for Outside Folks", in which he raps.
