Previous 'The Amazing Race 10'
Next 'The Amazing Race 12'

The Amazing Race 11 (titled The Amazing Race: All-Stars) is the eleventh installment of the popular four time Emmy Award winner reality television show, The Amazing Race. The Amazing Race 11 featured eleven teams of two, with a pre-existing relationship, in a race around the world.

The Amazing Race hired challenge producer Alan Bishop to design new tasks and challenges for this season. Bishop was responsible for challenges in recent installments of Survivor (Vanuatu, Guatemala, Panama).[3]

The Amazing Race joins fellow CBS reality competitions Survivor and Big Brother with all-star editions. An advertisement following the finale of Season 10 on December 10, 2006 confirms an earlier story from Variety (based on information from a CBS spokesperson on November 21, 2006) that this edition will feature 11 teams from previous seasons in an all-star format.[4][5] In a TV Guide interview, host Phil Keoghan stated that that the production team's goal for the race "wasn't to pick the best racers," but "to pick the teams that have earned the most attention over the last 10 seasons".[6]

Prior to news of the 11th race being an All-Star race, applications were due on June 2, 2006. Final casting interviews were scheduled for August 2006, yet no confirmation had been made as of mid September 2006 as to whether the final casting interviews took place. On September 28, 2006 CBS gave the go-ahead to an 11th season of the series.[7]

The season premiered on February 18, 2007 at 8:00 PM EST, 7:00 CST for one hour.[1] The one hour season finale will be aired on May 6, 2007.[8]

Note 1: Dustin & Kandice arrived 4th, but they had missed the clue to the Detour, having simply arrived by chance at one of the options. They had to go back and get the clue before checking in, but it did not affect their placing.
Note 2: Uchenna & Joyce arrived 3rd, and were assessed a 30 minute penalty for being marked for elimination and not arriving 1st. It did not affect their placing.
Note 3: Joe & Bill arrived 5th, and were assessed a 30 minute penalty for being marked for elimination and not arriving 1st. Eric & Danielle checked in shortly after the penalty started, and Joe & Bill were eliminated.
Note 4: The Roadblock count does not include the results of any unaired Roadblocks.
Note 5: Joyce confirmed in a post-race interview that she had done the newspaper recycling Roadblock prior to being eliminated[9]. Her performance is not included in this tally, however.
Note 6: Eric & Danielle arrived 2nd, and were assessed the 30 minute "Marked for Elimination" penalty, which caused them to drop a placing.

  • Red means the team was eliminated.
  • Purple means the team was the last to arrive at a pit stop in a non-elimination leg of the race and was thus "marked for elimination", meaning that if that team did not place first on the next leg, they would receive a 30 minute penalty.
  • Green means the team won the Fast Forward clue.
  • Matching colors of + symbols indicate teams who worked together during part of the leg as a result of the Intersection route marker.
  • A yellow > means that team chose to use the Yield; < indicates the team who received it; <> indicates a leg where the Yield was available but not used.

[edit] Trivia

[edit] General

  • Uchenna & Joyce (Season 7) are the only previous season winners to compete on All-Stars.
  • Eric & Danielle (Season 9) are the only all-stars who did not previously race together as a team on their season, though they did race against each other's respective teams; they met during the race and later started dating.
  • As of The Amazing Race: All-Stars, Rob & Amber have, in total, participated in five CBS Reality Competition shows. Amber participated in Survivor: The Australian Outback, while Rob participated in Survivor: Marquesas. Both of them subsequently participated in Survivor: All-Stars, The Amazing Race 7 and, now, The Amazing Race: All-Stars. In addition, Rob participated in Survivor: America's Tribal Council, and after Race 7 aired, the couple had their wedding broadcast by CBS in a two-hour special. Now they have another show airing on Fox Reality called Rob & Amber: Against the Odds.
  • This is the first season without a parent/child team.
  • Charla & Mirna and Danielle are the only all-stars who did not have a first place finish on any leg in their previous seasons.
  • Kevin and Drew are the only all-stars to have appeared on more than two seasons of the Amazing Race (aside from Season 11, they had raced in Season 1 and had a cameo appearance in Season 8).
  • Colin Guinn & Christie Lee Woods were expected to be in the All-Star edition,[10] but could not participate because Christie became pregnant.
  • Phil Keoghan was asked to submit a list of 15 teams that he thought should return. Ten of them were chosen. The one he didn't choose was Eric & Danielle. He said, "I didn't think of that new combination, which actually is a really good one."[11]
  • Rob & Amber are the first team to place first in the first three consecutive legs of a Race, and the third team to place first three legs in a row. In addition, they set a career record of 7 legs won and were the earliest eliminated team to have won more than two legs.
  • Flo and Drew (Season 3), who met and became a couple during the race, were asked to compete as All Stars. They declined because Flo felt the race brought out "the worst" in her and because she didn't want to do the race without Zach (her original partner).[citation needed]
  • As of Leg 4, Danielle became the first person to finish higher than their original race. As of Leg 8 Charla & Mirna became the first team to finish higher than their original race.
  • Three new countries got their first visits from the Race: Ecuador, Mozambique, and Poland. The Race also visited three new precincts of countries previously visited in the Race: Zanzibar (of Tanzania), Macau (of China) and Guam (of the United States).
  • Australia premiered this season of The Amazing Race on 12 April 2007 before having aired Season 10. This is the second time that a series has been shown before a previous season in Australia. The first time this has happened was with the ninth season. It was shown in early 2006 and the eighth season was shown in late 2006. Although the Channel 7 website has given extra details on the two all-stars teams from Season 10, viewers in Australia still do not know what the Intersection is, [12] or about the new non-elimination penalty, which was also introduced in Season 10.
  • Oswald & Danny and Uchenna and Joyce are so far the only teams in Race history to win at least two Fast Forward rewards; Oswald & Danny furthermore are the only team to win three Fast Forward rewards.
  • This will be the second time that at least one female team (Dustin & Kandice and/or Charla & Mirna) will be in the Final Three teams.
  • By yielding Eric & Danielle in Leg 9, Dustin and Kandice became the only team in Race history to use their Yield power twice. Eric & Danielle also tie the record for being yielded twice (with the Weaver family whom were yielded twice during Season 8), and Danielle is the most yielded person of the race with 3 yields.
  • Every team eliminated as of Leg 9 fared worse than their original season. Every team after, with the exception of Eric, will fare equals to or better than their previous placing.
  • Leg 10 marks the 5th time the Race has visited the People's Republic of China, which ties with India with the most visited foreign country in the 11 seasons so far.
  • The People's Republic of China is the second country to host back to back non-elimination legs with the other being Switzerland in Season 3.
  • The roadblock in Leg 11, a jump from Macau Tower's observation deck, is billed as the highest skyjump in the world (233 meters). According to Phil Keoghan, this was the highest jump in The Amazing Race history.
  • As of Leg 11, this season has tied with Season 1 as the least number of countries visited in a non-family edition season, with nine countries.

[edit] Pre-Race

  • Joe & Bill had to pull out of the Return of the Racers blog and a weekly live show TV session on BuddyTV during The Amazing Race 10 to participate in this season.
  • In an online interview at CBS.com, Jill cited Wikipedia as one of the sources she and John Vito used to read up on former races and racers before embarking on this Race.
  • Dustin & Kandice were not available for media interviews, including The Early Show and Finish Line, after their elimination from Season 10 due to their participation in this season. David & Mary, also from Season 10, were able to participate in media interviews as their elimination did not interfere with the taping of this season.

[edit] In-Race

  • Chip Arndt, the winner of Season 4, ran into racers Charla & Mirna and Teri & Ian on Leg 1 at Miami International Airport.[13] Chip was given permission to report his sightings but to not give any specific names on CBS's Return of the Racers blog.
  • In Leg 1, Mary wore a shirt saying "Missing" in reference to their allies The Cho Brothers (Erwin & Godwin) from Season 10. Later on, in Leg 2, David wore a shirt saying "Lost" with a picture of Phil on it; these same shirts had also been worn by Erwin & Godwin.
  • By the end of Leg 2, seven of the teams had finished in the same position as in the previous leg. This was the first time this had happened to so many teams.
  • Leg 3 showed a clip of a previous season when David & Mary were referring to the Cho Brothers, Erwin & Godwin. This is the first time they showed a clip of a previous season. In the subsequent Leg 4, additional clips and still frames from previous seasons were shown during the Roadblock task. Also, on Leg 11, while Oswald and Danny were about to perform a dragon Detour option, a clip of them from their season was shown performing a dragon-related task.
  • The website for the show mentions that in Leg 3, two teams (Uchenna & Joyce and Rob & Amber) attempted the 40-foot climb part of the Detour and switched tasks, the switch isn't aired in the episode.
  • The first four teams to be eliminated were the only teams who were beaten by other All-Star teams in their previous season (John Vito & Jill were beaten by Teri & Ian in season 3; Kevin & Drew were beaten by Joe & Bill in Season 1; David & Mary were beaten by Dustin & Kandice in season 10; and Rob & Amber were beaten by Uchenna & Joyce in season 7). The race began with four seasons represented by two teams. After the fourth leg, all represented seasons had exactly one team left.
  • Leg 5 was the first leg in the history of The Amazing Race to have two all-female teams come in 1st and 2nd place (Charla & Mirna and Dustin & Kandice).
  • Uchenna & Joyce received the 30 minute penalty on Leg 6 for not coming in first place when marked for elimination. They are the first team to survive this penalty since its introduction in Season 10.
  • Charla & Mirna came in first on Leg 6 in Tanzania. Ironically, this was the same country that they were eliminated in when racing in Season 5.
  • In Leg 6, for the first time since its introduction, there was no "location indicator" at the pit stop due to the fact that the pit stop location had to be changed mid-leg.[14]
  • While teams have left the Pit Stop on the next leg prior to all teams arriving from the previous leg, the differential between Leg 7 and Leg 8 was the first time that this situation has been explicitly noted by the show; this is due to these two legs being shown as a double-length episode. The prior legs Leg 6 and Leg 7 also had the same occurrence but was not noted by the show, since it was 2 separate episodes.
  • By the end of Leg 7, for the first time, an all-female team had won 3 legs in a row (Charla & Mirna in Legs 5 and 6 and Dustin & Kandice in Leg 7).
  • While no Roadblock was shown in Leg 7, a Roadblock clue is clearly visible in Joe & Bill's hands in a clip near the middle of the extended episode. This Roadblock involved rowing a rowboat on a reflecting pond outside the palace. It was likely edited out because it did not affect the final placement of teams. Danny checking in with a life-jacket on also proves this point. [15]
  • At the end of Leg 8, Oswald & Danny and Uchenna & Joyce, as a result of an Intersection and Fast Forward, checked in together, even though ties were abolished after Season 4. They both arrived first, but were told that only one prize would be awarded, and that the teams would have to decide which team got the prize. Oswald & Danny gave it to Uchenna & Joyce, so Uchenna & Joyce won the leg. In seasons up through Season 4, all tied first place teams received a prize; in all subsequent seasons, ties were forbidden and teams arriving at the same time would be split by one minute intervals.
  • While a few teams have switched Detour choices twice before, Oswald & Danny became the first team in Amazing Race history to switch Detour choices three times on Leg 9.
  • On Leg 9, having fallen so far behind the other teams and it being an elimination leg, Uchenna & Joyce appeared to be directed to the Pit Stop from their first Route Marker in Malaysia; thus they were shown skipping the Detour and Roadblock. However, according to Uchenna, they had performed all the tasks, but none were aired.[16]
  • Both All-Star teams from Season 7 were eliminated in the leg immediately following a first place finish: Rob & Amber in Leg 4, and Uchenna & Joyce in Leg 9.
  • After winning Leg 9, Dustin and Kandice won a set of motor scooters. This is the same prize they won for winning Leg 7 of Season 10.
  • In Leg 10, Oswald and Danny became the first team in Amazing Race history to win two Fast Forwards in one season. They are also the only team that won all Fast Forwards present in a season, as well as three Fast Forwards in their career.
  • As of Leg 11, Danielle is the only all-star to never place first. Charla and Mirna did not place first in their original season, but placed first in Legs 5 and 6 of this season.
  • As of Leg 11, Dustin & Kandice hold the career record for most first place finishes by an all-female team (2 on Season 10, 3 this season), for a total of 5. They also tie with the Godlewskis of Season 8 for most first place finishes in a season by an all-female team, with 3.
  • As of Leg 11, this season has had the most number of first place finishes by all-female teams (3 by Dustin & Kandice on Legs 7, 9 & 11, and 2 by Charla & Mirna on Legs 5 & 6), for a total of 5.
  • As of Leg 11, Danielle has been the only person to be yielded three times in the history of the Amazing Race. She also ties with the Weaver family of Season 8 to be yielded twice in a season.
  • Leg 11 marks the fourth time a team that has been Yielded has placed ahead of the team that Yielded them. It is also the third time that the team who used the Yield finished the leg in last place, and the second time a team survived the 30-minute penalty for not arriving at the Pit Stop first when marked for elimination.

[edit] Post-Race

  • CBS announced on February 15, 2007 that eliminated contestants had been videotaped living together in a common house in their sequester location in Acapulco, Mexico with the results edited into a 13-episode series entitled Elimination Station. The series, viewable only in the United States, will be made available on the InnerTube video streaming service on the CBS website, with a new episode debuting immediately following the airing of each new Amazing Race episode in the Pacific time zone this season.[17]

[edit] Prizes

Unless otherwise noted, prizes were awarded to the first team to check in for each leg.

  • Leg 1 - A trip to the Whistler Lodge in Whistler, British Columbia, Canada provided by Travelocity.
  • Leg 2 - An off-road motorcycle for each member.
  • Leg 3 - A home gym for each member.
  • Leg 4 - A trip to the Royal Lahaina Resort in Maui provided by Travelocity.
  • Leg 5 - A trip to Aruba provided by Travelocity.

  • Leg 11 - A Yamaha Waverunner for each member.

[edit] Elimination Station

The first five teams eliminated were sequestered at a villa in Acapulco, Mexico to await the finale. Subsequent eliminated teams telephoned the villa to inform the teams at the villa of their elimination, but continued to run the race as decoys to throw off spoilers to the final outcome of the race.

CBS posted short videos on its website after each episode aired in the Pacific time zone to show the eliminated teams interacting at the villa.

  • After Leg 1, John Vito & Jill were eliminated, being sent to the villa first. While there, they were guessing who would be eliminated next. They thought it would either be Charla & Mirna or Kevin & Drew.
  • After Leg 2, Kevin & Drew came to the villa next. While there, Kevin, Drew, and John Vito were arguing over what a stoop was. Later, they guessed Charla & Mirna would be eliminated next.
  • After Leg 3, David & Mary became the third team to arrive at the villa. David recounted how he was misdirected by several Chilean locals over breakfast. Later, Jill shows David & Mary the master suite they saved for the first married couple. Later, Drew guessed Teri & Ian might be eliminated next.
  • After Leg 4, Rob & Amber became the fourth team to arrive at the villa. Rob and Amber were welcomed very nicely. John Vito and Jill even said they were a strong team. Later, they guessed that the next elimination would be Eric & Danielle.
  • After Leg 5, the four eliminated teams sat around waiting for another team, only to hear John Vito and Kevin figure out that it must be a non-elimination leg. They spent time on a beach overlook, and back at the villa, Rob dragged Mary into the pool.
  • After Leg 6, Teri & Ian became the fifth team to arrive at the villa, where Drew put on a displeased face for the camera. A disgruntled Ian revealed that he believes Oswald & Danny are ruthless racers with no character, saying that when he worked with them in Ushuaia to book flights, they deliberately booked him a different flight and did not confirm it. He said that the same thing happened when Eric & Danielle worked with Oswald and Danny. He also predicted that either Dustin & Kandice or Uchenna & Joyce would win.
  • After Leg 7, John Vito and Jill ponder about this non-elimination round. Ian expresses how he and Teri bonded with Joe & Bill and Eric & Danielle as a result of their spending consecutive days together in airports. Amber does tattoos for entertainment.
  • After Leg 8, the five eliminated teams get a call from the sixth eliminated team Joe & Bill. The eliminated teams are sad to hear that Joe & Bill were eliminated from the race. Mary asks Joe & Bill who they think should win. Bill says that he would love to see Uchenna & Joyce or Charla & Mirna win. The guests talk about the call the next morning. In a confessional, Kevin and Drew said that since they were so close to the finish line, they would see Joe & Bill where the Race finishes.[18]
  • After Leg 9, Uchenna & Joyce called the villa and told the eliminated teams about their flight problem that led to their elimination. The teams at the villa expressed disappointment at Uchenna & Joyce's elimination, and Amber tells them they would meet up at the finish line. Prior to the call, Drew questions why Dustin & Kandice need to participate in the Race when they had already won beauty pageants. Amber takes exception to this, having won Survivor: All-Stars prior to her original season of The Amazing Race.
  • After Leg 10, the eliminated teams waited for another team, only to discover that the leg was non-elimination. Amber taught Mary how to swim. Mary overcome the fear of not being able to swim for a long time.
  • After Leg 11, the eliminated teams await a phone call from the next eliminated team, but give up after several days without a phone call. John Vito came up with the idea of throwing an awards party to commemmorate the end of their stay at the villa. Each racer drew another racer's name and presented him or her with funny and sometimes touching gifts.

Once they had collected enough newspapers to make a stack eight hands (approximately six feet) high, they would receive their next clue.

[edit] Leg 10 (Malaysia → People's Republic of China)

Fast Forward
The team had to travel five miles to a film set located at the former Kai Tak Airport where a high-speed stunt was being filmed for an action movie. When they arrived, they had to get in a car with a professional stunt driver and complete a stunt course, involving sharp turns and the car flipping over, after which they received the Fast Forward.
Detour
Kung Fu Fighting: Teams had to travel five miles to Tonkin Street and find a nearby building (the Former Cheung Sha Wan Police Quarters). Once there, they had to climb up an 11-story bamboo scaffold while avoiding an ongoing battle between stunt kung fu experts to reach the top and retrieve their next clue.
Lost In Translation: Teams needed to make their way four miles to Kowloon City and find Nga Tsin Wai Road. Once there, they had to search among hundreds of similar-looking Chinese signs for the specific sign shown in a photo in their clue. When they matched the photo with the correct store sign, the owner would hand them their next clue.
Roadblock
The selected teammate had to kick down doors in an abandoned police building, and search the rooms behind the doors for their clue.
Additional Task
At Victoria Park, teams had to pull a model boat carrying a Travelocity gnome from one end of a pond to the other without having the gnome fall into the water. The Pit Stop clue was contained in the bottom of the boat.
