[edit] Career Story

Mortaza is one of the best pace bowlers to have emerged from Bangladesh. Andy Roberts, the former West Indian fast bowler, played an important role in the emergence of Mortaza, when he worked with the Bangladeshi pace bowlers in 2001.

His Test debut was against Zimbabwe at Dhaka in 2001-02, where he impressed with his energy. However, in only his third Test, against New Zealand Mortaza suffered a knee injury which kept him out of the game for nearly two years. He excelled in the second Test against England in 2003-04, taking 4 for 60 in the first innings to keep Bangladesh in touch, but suffered a twisted knee towards the end of the game that again kept him out of international cricket, for over a year on this occasion.

In the 2004 Test series against India, Mortaza announced his return by pegging back Rahul Dravid's off stump. He bowled consistently in the Test series, and had to endure watching chances off Tendulkar and Ganguly being dropped. He was also the man of the match in the historic one-day win over India in that series.

He was recalled towards the end of 2006, and subsequently enhanced his reputation on the inaugural tour of England, performing admirably in that series. He was by far the most economical of the Bangladeshi bowlers. Mortaza bowled magnificently in their huge upset against Australia in Cardiff, removing Adam Gilchrist for a duck and only conceding 33 runs from 10 overs.

Historically, Bangladesh always lacked a true fast bowler. There were always spinners and the team had a good spinner with Mohammad Rafique, but lacked good pace bowlers. Mashrafe seems to be ready to fulfill that role.

In the 3rd ODI of Bangladesh's tour to Zimbabwe in 2006, Mortaza was hit for 6 off the final ball of the match by Brendan Taylor, giving the Zimbabweans victory.

In the calendar year of 2006 Mortaza was the highest wicket taker in ODIs, taking 49 wickets.

Mortaza played the leading role in Bangladesh's victory over New Zealand in the warm-up match for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007 taking 4 wickets with the ball and a crucial hard-hitting batting performance as a tailender. He was also the man of the match in Bangladesh's victory over India during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007, taking 4 wickets for 38 runs.

Mortaza is known as Bangladesh's fastest bowler and is also known to fans as the "Narail Express" as he comes from the area.

Mortaza is also a hard-hitting batsmen. His most notable innings came in the 2nd ODI against India in Dhaka, where he smashed four consecutive sixes. His 25 runs off that over is the highest by any Bangladeshi batsmen. During the Tests later in the month, he made his maiden Test half-century in style with a 79, playing a vital role in securing a draw. In the next match he also scored 70, and ended up Bangladesh's highest scorer of runs as well as joint highest in wickets in the series, showing potential as an all-rounder.

He was rewarded for these performances by appointment as vice-captain of the team on June 2 2007.
