Martin is a common given and family name in most European and Hispanic (Latin) languages. It derives from the Latin name Martinus, which is a diminutive form of Mart-, the stem of the word for "war" and also the Roman god Mars. The meaning is usually rendered "Of War", "Warlike", or in reference to the god as "Of Mars." One well-known Irish family are called Martyn. It has also been popular among Protestants due to Martin Luther. In addition, Black American children are often given the name in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr..
