The Malaysian hip hop scene started in 1990s with groups such as 4U2C,NICO, KRU. Their so-called "Rap Music" wasn't accepted by the mainstream community and they had to changed to a more pop-ish sound. The Malaysian music scene was dominated by them until 1995-1996, when Poetic Ammo came out with their classic album It's a Nice Day to Be Alive. Their 1st hit, "Everything Changes" revolutionized the local music industry. There are groups from the underground scene that have established themeselves such as Naughtius Maximus, but it was Poetic Ammo that made it big.
One of the powerhouses of hip hop in Malaysia is Too Phat, which consists of Malique and Joe Flizzow. They were signed to EMI International's Positive Tone division and produced their first hit album, Whutadilly and their 1st single was "Too Phat Baby" featuring Ruffedge. Their Plan B album was a hit, with songs such as "Anak Ayam" and "Just a Friend" featuring V.E receiving massive air play by local stations.
With Too Phat's success other underground groups such as Muchachaz, M.O.B and The Teh Tarik Crew have followed in their footsteps, eventually forming The Phat Family.
Other hip hop groups and artists have slowly emerged onto the scene, such as Reefa and The Joint. Some of the latest additions are KLG Sqwad,Hyperkinetix, Chakrasonic, Agniputra, B-Squarez, Three Flow/Dose2, The Rebel Scum, JBC Familia, K-Town Clan and Refugeez who are among the more established new comers in the scene.
Malaysia also boosts a number of established hip hop producers such as G Soul (who goes under more current aliases Qumran and BlissKid), Kugan aka Funktionz, Damien Shorty Soul, Cat, D'Navigator,T Bone,Goldfish, Merp Premo, KC Sash& Aveenxionz

In other air, another new genre discovered in Malaysia is called Sumazau Hip Hop. The genre hailing from Borneo started in 2005 when local DJ/MC from Sabah ATAMA (DJ Andrew Ambrose) fused a music that have the element of tradtional beat and he also known the first singer in Sabah have develop kind of music. The album entitled 'My Tribal Roots' is a fusion of raw tribal instruments and bobohizan priest chanting in a mix with other r&b, soul & rap style. The album featured Rydiana (Malaysian Idol) and Sabahan MCs Johnny Black, Nukie-D, CrazieFingaz (The Kinabalu Kingz). The 1st single 'Throw Your Hands in The Air' toppled the Sabah charts and revolutionized the hiphop scene. Other MCs who have released LPs of this style in Sabah is Max & Kinabalu Kingz.
