Luftwaffenmuseum der Bundeswehr
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Luftwaffenmuseum der Bundeswehr (German for "Airforce Museum of the Bundeswehr"), together with the Militärhistorische Museum der Bundeswehr, is one of the major military history museums in Germany. The museum acts as an independent military department. Entrance to the museum is free.
It's located in Berlin at the formerly British military Gatow Airport. The focus is on the military airforce history from the beginning to present times, especially with the main focus on the history of the Luftwaffe of the Bundeswehr. The museum has a collection of more than 200,000 exposition pieces, with 155 aeroplanes, 5,000 uniform pieces, 30,000 books, photos, small guns, etc.
Exhibited planes include World War I planes like the Fokker E.III as replicas, as well as World War II planes like the Bf 109 as well as at least one aircraft nearly of every type ever to serve in the air forces of East and West Germany. Most of those postwar aircraft are stored outside on the tarmac and runways, however and many are in bad condition. The museum seeks donations to restore the planes stored outside. Also there are a number of long term restoration projects, including a Focke-Wulf Fw 190.
