Talk:List of civil parishes in Scotland

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

where did the 1975 counties come from? i have found Cathcart which seems particularly troublesome as it should have been in county of the city of Glasgow since 1912? See also Talk:List of Scottish counties by population for a list which has been apparently based on this one. Morwen - Talk 15:11, 14 October 2006 (UTC)

That would be me, based on Vision of Britain and [1] as far as I remember. Not sure about Cathcart, VoB have it as in Renfrewshire until 1975. Elsewhere I see that "most of" the parish went to Glasgow in 1912. But the remainder of the parish seems to have continued to exist in Renfrewshire: the National Archives have parish council records until 1929 [2].
Perhaps the county column can go, if its just creating confusion... Lozleader 13:56, 15 October 2006 (UTC)
I've had a look at a few sources and it seems that while civil parishes were only to be in one county after 1891, this doesn't seem to have applied to counties of cities. Only Edinburgh enjoyed that atatus in 1891, and it would seem that when the other three were created, and when the cities were extended, the burghal and landward portions of the parishes were in different counties.
I called the column "county in 1975" to make it clear that these weren't current divisions. This seems to have backfired nvertheless. As I can't find any source for the parishes that were wholly or partly in the counties of cities, I shall change the county column to 1891 instead. Lozleader 19:17, 15 October 2006 (UTC)
Ok, that makes sense.
Now, one thing I remain curious about is the statement at VoB (i think the glasgow county of city page), which said that bits of Renfrewshire and Dunbartonshire made part of Glasgow in 1926 became also part of Lanarkshire. What did this mean : was this just for statistical purposes or what, I wonder? the lanarkshire ceremonial county didn't extend to Glasgow, as I understand it. Morwen - Talk 19:44, 15 October 2006 (UTC)
I saw that, too. It says it was the same "act" that changed the counties, so I suppose someone has to chase that up...Lozleader 20:01, 15 October 2006 (UTC)
Try emailing them. I've questioned them before and got a full, prompt and coherent response. MRSC 21:04, 15 October 2006 (UTC)
According to The Times on March 18, 1925, Glasgow Corporation was promoting a Glasgow Extension Bill of some sort (adding 22,000 acres and 30,000 people to a city which was already 19,183 acres and had a population of "well over a million" : apparently mostly to build new stuf fon. it was proposing to extend right up to, but not annex, the burghs of Clydebank, Renfrew, Paisley, and Rutherglen.
We then get a Committee decision being reported on July 16, 1925. Glasgow Boundaries Act 1925 (15 & 16 Geo. 5 c. cxxxi). I will have a look at the british library for it but it may not have all local acts. Morwen - Talk 20:12, 15 October 2006 (UTC)
Ok, I looked this up and indeed they had it - see talk:Glasgow Boundaries Act 1925. Morwen - Talk 16:22, 21 October 2006 (UTC)
