List of characters in Camp Lazlo

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The following is a list of characters which appear in the Cartoon Network animated television series Camp Lazlo.

Contents

[edit] Main Bean Scouts

[edit] Lazlo

Main article: Lazlo (Camp Lazlo)

Lazlo is a cheerful Brazilian spider monkey.

[edit] Raj

Raj is a cautious Indian elephant who speaks with a distinct Indian accent. Born in India, Raj is one of Lazlo's bunkmates and best friends in the Jelly Bean Cabin at Camp Kidney and is seen spending most of his time with Lazlo and Clam; the three are collectively known as the "Jelly Trio."[1] Jeff Bennett voiced Raj.

[edit] Development of Raj

The Raj character design appeared in many of Joe Murray's sketchbooks; the Raj design appeared as a character in "Family Pop," a web series written by Murray. [2]

When Murray created Camp Lazlo, he wanted one of the main characters to be an Indian and decided that Raj would make a good choice. [2] Murray thought about an Indian elephant and its personality, and "that’s how we got Raj." [3] When the network asked Murray to choose a character for an accent, Murray chose Raj over Lazlo and gave him an Indian accent. Originally Murray created Raj with a massive overbite, creating a "spitty" noise; he decided to remove the trait as he felt it made the voice difficult to understand. [2]

[edit] Character of Raj

Cartoon Network's press kit described Raj as "reluctant, neurotic," and "often finds himself pulled into situation that he would rather avoid but goes along with Lazlo and Clam for fear of being left alone." Raj's parents sent him to Camp Kidney because they believed that Raj needed "toughening up."[1] The press kit says that he and his disorders, including a "cleaning compulsion," skin ruptures, and phobias of snakes and "bugs" and found "a philosophical home at Camp Kidney." The kit states that Raj uses many "sayings" that "usually strike a point with his co-conspirators."[1]

The Hollywood Reporter reviewer Ray Richmond described Raj as "wise and neurotic." [4] Instead of the usual Bean Scout hat, Raj wears a combination beanie and a fez. The propeller spins rapidly when he is agitated, a common visual clue used with many other characters where a prop reacts to the person's state of mind (Popeye is one quintessential example, where his pipe spins).

Raj owns an "extensive and dusty hi-fi" gramophone record collection.[1]

Raj has had a bit of rivalry with Samson[5][6] and Samson once tried to hide in Raj's potato salad, which made Raj understandably upset.[7] When Raj finds a secret hot spring to soak in, Raj and Samson again get into another argument over ownership of the hot spring. [8] Raj is a bit of a "drama queen", storming off the stage during play rehearsal; it actually turns out that he suffers from stage fright.[9]

He is heavily obsessive compulsive[10] and hates messes, pests and anything that slithers or crawls and cowers from many things such as swimming. Raj has a very sensitive disposition and easily gets upset to the point of crying when saddened, scared or making big careless mistakes. He even cries much more often than Lazlo and he tends to react by hiccuping.

In spite of his fears, Raj sticks with his friends in their adventures because, like them, he loves fun (almost as much as his yodelling record collection). He is a good balance to Lazlo's impulsiveness and sometimes has to bring Lazlo back to reality when his imagination is overactive. It would also seem that he has 17 older sisters, as heard in "Wedding Bell Blues".

He dreams of becoming a professional disc jockey.[11][12]. Everyone pronounces Lumpus' name as Luhm-puss IPA: /ˈlʌmpʊs/) while Raj and Slinkman are the only ones who pronounces it as Loohm-puss /ˈlumpʊs/). While at camp, his parents send him presents from Kaffizzle River.[13][14]

[edit] Clam

Clam is a small albino pygmy rhinoceros [1] who is part of the "Jelly Trio."[1] Although being one of the main characters of the show, he rarely speaks. He has a low voice and usually speaks in short bursts of few words, often repeating the last words that others say. Carlos Alazraqui voiced Clam.

[edit] Development of Clam

Murray said that he had "no idea where he came from." He said that he started drawing a character with rhinoceros horns and the form is "what he became." [3]

Originally Murray created Clam as a mute, but he decided that he preferred Clam to have a voice. [2]

[edit] Character of Clam

Cartoon Network's press kit describes Clam as an "eccentric musical and academic genius," "misunderstood," and "protective." [1] The Hollywood Reporter reviewer Ray Richmond described Clam as "highly intelligent." [4] Clam once painted a portrait that looked identical to Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa. From an empty soda bottle [2], he coaxed a symphonic version of Beethoven's Ninth, complete with supporting chorus. [15] He exhibits fluent understanding of the French language, [16] created a bicycle out of wood [17] and modified a hairdryer into a remote-controlled airplane[18]. Clam understands the operation of technology and machinery that other characters find "confusing." [1] Clam eats cereal in order to obtain prizes from the cereal carton; most of the possessions he brings to camp consist of prizes from cereal boxes. [1]

When Samson created a secret stash of candy, Clam's trade offer was an abacus. [19] Despite all this, he has modest dreams of one day being a professional bathroom attendant. [11] He has an talent for voice impersonation, making his voice sound exactly like Edward. [20]

Belying his short stature, Clam also has immense strength. While collecting firewood, he is seen carrying an enormous tree trunk [17], and at other times he carried the Jellies on his shoulders. [15] Clam's razor-sharp horns have been used for opening cans and cutting through or into things. [21] [7]

Of the three Jellies, Clam tends to serve as a balance between Raj's over-cautiousness and Lazlo's love of thrill seeking, though he generally prefers to ally with Lazlo. This is best exemplified when the first time all three meet, Lazlo suggested that their cabin name should be "Jelly"; while Raj voted against it, Clam was in full support of the name [22]. A rare disagreement occurs when both Clam and Raj refuse to be drawn in to Lazlo's rose-colored world, choosing to not accompany Lazlo when he goes on Edward's lake tour. When the Jellies were attempting to start a lake tour business, Edward typically out-did their efforts, and Lazlo came to the conclusion that it was better to not compete with Edward; Raj and Clam were offended that Lazlo was so quick to give up on the idea. [23] Sometimes, Clam and Raj clash amongst themselves, with Lazlo being the mediator. [24]

[edit] Edward T. Platypus

Edward T. Platypus is a duck-billed platypus who sleeps in Pinto Cabin with Chip and Skip. He enjoys watching the suffering of others and is constantly coming up with schemes to spoil any fun that Lazlo and his pals might have. He has a severe hatred for Lazlo and Camp Kidney, though that has lessened over time. Murray described Edward as having "a serious negative attitude and no social skills." [2] The official Cartoon Network press kit described Edward as "a stickler for rules" who hates "any scout who doesn’t follow them." [1] Murray described Edward as one of his and his crew's favorite characters to write for. [2] Edward often plots to ruin the Jelly Trio and its "freethinking ways," and the plans often fail. [1]

Despite Edward's intense dislike of Lazlo, he joins forces with him for a common goal on a few occasions [25] [26] [27]

Edward is the youngest member of Camp Kidney and was the only camper who could not watch the horror movie because he was not a "big boy" yet according to the Beanscout handbook [28] Despite his age, he has his own credit card. [29]

As opposed to his aggressive and bitter attitude, Edward secretly loves playing with dolls, his favorite being a doll named Veronica that he got for Christmas, and he liked it so much, he told his mom (Susan) to give the rest of his presents to charity. He would also really like to own a "voodoo drum". [30]

Edward won Camp Kidney's mascot contest with his "Duke of Lice" costume by blackmailing the Jellies (who were certain to win) but the prize was not as good as it originally seemed [31] A similar twist of fate occurred when Edward wins the go-kart race, yet his trophy is the smallest of them all. [29]

Of the camper's, Edward is the only one to have his brothers appear. Murray said that the situation involving the brothers provided insight into Edward's neurosis.

His closest friends are his bunkmates Chip and Skip who are the only campers who make him feel smart due to their collective stupidity [32] Gretchen from Acorn Flats has a crush on Edward, which Patsy finds amusing. [16] Both Edward and Gretchen are terrified when they find out they both must compete with Lazlo in checkers. When he is confronted by McMuesli over his anger issues, Edward mutters a single word, "loser", which is a stark allusion to the insecurities Edward feels. Both Edward and Gretchen are "happy" when they daydream of running McMuesli over with a steamroller. [33]

Edward is also very deceitful. He ordered a number of fake merit badges, to claim the honor of being the only Bean Scout to have every Bean Scout Merit badge that ever existed. This event almost has him attending Tomato Camp. [34] In The List, Edward breaks the fourth wall by looking at and talking to the audience.

Being a bully, Edward has some unusual forms of cruelty, such as forcing one of the campers to eat mud. [35]

Edward is voiced by Doug Lawrence.

[edit] Samson J. Clogmeyer

Samson J. Clogmeyer is an accident-prone, nerdy, obsessively tidy guinea pig who wears large spectacles in Fava Bean Cabin. He has terrible luck, is easily hurt, is known as the "Camp Wimp", and is constantly pushed around by some of his fellow campers. Due to his numerous physical weaknesses, he has an assortment of "health buddies" named "Nasal Allergy Buddy", "Asthma Buddy", "Foot Fungus Buddy", "Eyeball Buddy and "Skin Rash Buddy". When upset or agitated, he will repeatedly say "merp" or "nerts" (an onomatopoeia for a noise a guinea pig makes).

Originally Samson served as a background, secondary character[36]. Murray liked the story concepts stemming from Samson's phobias and "whiney, Truman Capote'esque" character traits. Murray liked Bennett's voice acting and the stories involving Samson created by writer Kaz. [2] The Cartoon Network press kit describes Samson as a "magnet for catastrophe" because he uses his scientific knowledge to advance his "paranoid sense of impending doom."[1]

Samson encounters difficulty in his attempts to fit in with the rest of the campers. The rest of the scouts ignore him, and Samson is often interrupted while speaking. When social, he is usually seen with Edward, only to be pushed around by Edward's dominating personality.

Making friends is a constant source of grief for Samson. When Lazlo and Raj pretended to be interested in Samson, his countenance brightened significantly, only to fall back into despair when he realized that the other scouts really did not have any personal interest in him.[37]

While the other campers have mailboxes full of letters from friends, Samson is mocked because his mailbox was empty. [38] He keeps a secret journal, where it's revealed that he really wants to be Lazlo's friend. [39]. It seems he resorts to talking to frozen cavemen, who goes berserk; and talking to rocks, which slithers away, because no one else will listen to him.[40] Multivitamins are his favorite food.

Samson's weight is another point for others to poke fun at him, both Edward and Commander Hoo-hah have called Samson by the unflattering nickname "Butterball" and Raj and Edward have also called him "Dough-boy".

He is part of the Fava Cabin along with Dave and Ping-Pong and is the postmaster for both of the scouts' camps; he picks up mail at the main post office in Prickly Pines before delivering it to either Acorn Flats or Camp Kidney. [7][41] He once turned into a camp bully after he discovers that his pillow armor makes him invincible. [42]

Samson also seems to have some sort of rivalry with Raj, the two had a bitter argument over who owned a hot spring; later they decided to share it[8]. Samson is convinced that some new scouts are aliens but the only people who will believe Samson are minor background characters. Raj makes fun of his situation by saying "You think it makes a difference if those vague background characters believe you? Surely you can do better than that!", which only provokes Samson further in trying to redeem himself.[39] It is later revealed that Samson's new "friends" were the aliens in disguise and that they were only using him to achieve their schemes, and they even refer to him as obese.

It is later reaveled that Samson's parents are jellyfish in the episode "S is for crazy." This is strangely absurd, considering Samson is a guinea pig. This also causes much discomfort to Samson when he touches his parents. During that episode, Samson was dared to poke a deadly jellyfish that washed ashore, and it turned out to be a friend of his parents.

It is shown that the cause of samsons "bad luck" is that every camper has to play their luck in a casino jackpot. Every other camper got an average prize or "luck". Instead samson got the worst prize which is three dodge balls (which is a run-on joke, because samson is usually seen being hit in the face with dodge balls). Lazlo was next and got jackpot, which explains his "good luck", which is rarely seen.

Samson is voiced by Jeff Bennett.

[edit] Chip and Skip

Chip and Skip are two unintelligent dirt-loving dung beetle brothers. Not only do they love dirt, it is required that they stay dirty; if they become clean, they will fall asleep for 100 years. [43] Skip is the only camper to wear a sash with several awards pinned to it; this is a device to help viewers differentiate between Skip and Chip. Also, Chip's voice is slightly lower then Skip's. They live in Pinto Cabin with Edward. The official Cartoon Network press release described the two as confused by "their role in nature." Edward often asks them to assist him in his schemes. [1]

The two are constantly being followed by a smelly dirt cloud [1] and a large group of fruit flies that they obtained from Lazlo. [22] On his website Murray commented, "I am sure that the overseas animators got tired of constantly including their ever-present flies into every shot." [2] The features prevent the brothers from stealthily moving. [1]

Skip is the eldest of the two, having been born three seconds earlier than Chip. They are both both six feet and one inch (185 centimeters). [44] When not at camp, they're cared for by three nannies; they also have the ability to summon filth and scum to themselves (a parody of the Wonder Twins). [45]

While they appear to be dim-witted, they are members of the Genius Society [46] While they were hanging upside down, the blood rushed to their brains and turned them into geniuses. Among the astonishing things they did were mending Samson's kaleidoscope, developed a growth-enhancing liquid, answering several questions from some Bean Scouts, creating a computer out of twigs and clay and freeing themselves psionically from being hung. [32] Envelopes are their favorite "food", because they like the taste of them and sacrifice them to the volcano. [47] They appear to have uncanny strength and were literally able to move mountains for Lumpus. [45]

Both are voiced by Steve Little. Murray encountered Little when Little performed at The Groundlings in Los Angeles. Murray asked Little if he was interested in being a voice actor and decided that Little matched the Dung Beetles. [2]

[edit] Dave and Ping Pong

Dave and Ping Pong are two identical twin common loons except that Ping Pong is taller. Unlike Chip and Skip, they are only together if the plot requires. They are both part of Fava Cabin with Samson. As loons, they are able to fly, which is shown on at least one occasion. [48]

The two eat many "bugs" and indicate scenarios that can ruin any plan. [1]

They are usually seen saying or mumbling about a topic considered boring to other campers.[11]. It is implied that they are smart, as they are most of the time talking "nerdy", and discussing a topic that is considered high school-level. Whenever they are seen one of them says something, to which the other responds with "That seems logical". They are so tall that they have placed tables with pillows at the heads of their beds, since their bodies extend beyond the normal bed frames.[46]

Later episodes in the series has shown that they are both in charge of the camp newspaper, "The Weekly Bean" (which was later renamed to "The Bean" thanks to some help from Lazlo) and editing the camp yearbook.[46]

Doug Lawrence voices both characters.

[edit] The Lemmings

The Lemmings are a group of teal-colored and black eyed lemmings. They usually appear in groups of four, however, in some episodes, there are more than four lemmings.[46]

Like lemmings, they will follow one another, even to the point of running into a tree together. When Edward pulls one lemming's trousers down, the other lemmings' trousers fall down. This bemuses Edward, as he repeats this again to see the effect.[49] The lemmings seem to play amongst themselves quite often, as they are seen playing on a seesaw, two-on-two style, [44] and they danced amongst themselves during a dance party hosted by Lazlo.[50] They're often in the background carrying odd objects which are incongruous with the plot, as seen when they move in and out of the scene carrying a cow.[51] They have two mothers and fathers who won the Parent's Day relay race.[52]

A Cartoon Network press kit gives the brothers the names Larry, Louie, Leonard, and Liniment.[1]

All four of their voices are done by Steve Little.

[edit] Camp Kidney Staff

[edit] Scoutmaster Lumpus

Algonquin C. Lumpus is an angry moose with a large ego. Tom Kenny voiced Lumpus. The Cartoon Network press release refers to him as Leonard Lumpus. [1]

Murray originally created Lumpus as a horse; Murray changed the design to a moose when the design seemed more "mountain" [sic] to the Camp Lazlo creator. Murray experimented with voices, imagining and later disliking a "Don Knotts"-like voice. Murray described Kenny's voice as a "crazy mix of Richard Nixon and W. C. Fields." Murray stated that he enjoyed writing situations involving Lumpus as the character had "no morals and zero conscience." As Camp Lazlo episodes entered production, Slinkman, Lumpus's right-hand man, takes increasing control of the camp as Lumpus increasingly becomes mentally incapacitated. Kenny, during a recording, thought of a scenario involving Lumpus locking the real scoutmaster, described by Murray as bearing resemblance to Heffer Wolfe of Rocko's Modern Life, into a closet. Murray decided to use the concept as a twist ending in the last episode, adding that the twist "tied up his character well." [2]

The official Cartoon Network press kit describes Lumpus as a "frustrated" and "egomaniacal" individual who "needs to have his world in complete order." [1] The Hollywood Reporter reviewer Ray Richmond described Lumpus as "thin-skinned."[4] Common Sense Media reviewer Joly Herman, whose review is posted on Go.com, describes Lumpus as "primary malignant, greedy character who yells at the campers and ends up getting his just desserts in the end"[sic] [53] and characterizes his yelling as "frightening, even if Lazlo does not take him seriously."[54]

Lumpus throws temper tantrums, complete with screaming, stomping, and/or crying if his demands are not met. He wishes to become the Head Scoutmaster and feels disappointment with his current role.[1]

Lumpus has a crush on Squirrel Scout leader Ms. Jane Doe, who is oblivious to his constant attempts to take her on a date.[55] [2] Lumpus enjoys Doe's "Minnesota accent."[1] Towards the end of Camp Lazlo, Lumpus marries Doe. [2]

Nobody knows Lumpus's secret: he loves playing with dolls and has a collection of them stashed in his closet. He is a member of a "secret" fraternal organization called the "Legume Council" and desires to be Grand Legume.[56]

Lumpus's family name is mispronounced by everyone except Raj and Slinkman (who only mispronounces it in Lumpus' absence). Everyone else refers to him as Scoutmaster "Lump-us". Everything has to be exactly how he likes and wants it to be or he becomes enraged. He is in a perpetual bad mood and this horrible disposition seems to come from his parents' failure to visit him at camp or maintain any relationship with him [57]. One of the things that does make Scoutmaster Lumpus happy is doing whatever he can to ruin the fun for the other scouts. This includes confiscating packages sent to the campers from home, because they are against camp rules; this is just an excuse as he keeps them for himself afterwards. However, the very thought of eating can turn his personality around.[58][47]

Lumpus wants to be Head Scout Leader but is "stuck" in his job running Camp Kidney, where he lives year-round. He is always making sure that no one — especially his least-favorite Bean Scout, Lazlo and the rest of Jelly Bean Cabin — have any fun. His hatred towards Lazlo is fueled between Lazlo's carefree personality and Lazlo's inadvertent disruption of his plans.

Lumpus had a ritual of annually visiting an old site near the camp where his grandfather, General Sherman B. Lumpus, had fought in and won a battle though after an attempt to scam his fellow troops. General Lumpus was attacked by his own men and ended up rolling down the mountain into a passing circus train. "He[General Lumpus] was last seen cleaning up after the elephants,"[59]

Scoutmaster Lumpus hates almost everyone and lacks any kind of social skills. His disrespectful nature is targeted towards Slinkman and does whatever he wishes to make Slinkman's life as miserable as his, despite the fact that he truly likes Slinkman deep-down and considers Slinkman his friend.[60] The only individual to whom he shows any respect is Commander Hoo-Hah, but this is just because Hoo-Hah is his boss and that Hoo-hah intimidates Lumpus.

In the series finale, it is revealed that Lumpus was never a scoutmaster at all: he is a mentally deranged lunatic who had been secretly holding the real scoutmaster hostage all summer and impersonating him. After the real scoutmaster escapes, Lumpus is dragged off to an insane asylum, where he currently resides.

[edit] Slinkman

Slinkman is a quiet nervous banana slug. Like a real slug, Slinkman is an invertebrate organism. Tom Kenny voiced Slinkman.

Murray discovered banana slugs in the Santa Cruz Mountains when he attended summer camps as a child. Murray originally created Slinkman as Lumpus's "beaten-down" assistant with a voice intended to sound "like Dustin Hoffman's Rain man." [sic] As episodes entered production, Slinkman gained increasing control over Camp Kidney as Lumpus became more mentally incapacitated. As a consequence, Slinkman's voice drifted away from the Rain Man voice towards a Christian Slater voice. Murray stated that Kaz placed an eye stalk gag involving Slinkman in all of the episodes that he wrote. [2]

Slinkman knows the Bean Scout manual cover-to-cover and can follow Lumpus's schedule at a better quality than Lumpus's following of his own schedule. [1] Slinkman, loyal and obedient, keeps the camp in operation when Lumpus experiences a meltdown.[1] Slinkman sometimes respects the book more than he cares about the kids.[61] He generally assumes a submissive role, lacking "enough spine to stand up for himself." [1]

There have been a handful of situations where Slinkman stood up to Lumpus, such as when he wanted to go to "Slugfest" but Lumpus would not permit it until Slinkman went berserk and wrecked all of Lumpus' possessions, belched into the camp PA system and licked Lumpus' hands, getting slug slime all over them.[60] However, these instances are the exception and are usually only when Slinkman's compliant, non-confrontational nature is pushed to the limit. A flashback is shown from Slinkman's point of view, where Lumpus is pouring salt on Slinkman, as punishment for not confiscating campers candy; this may go a way towards explaining Slinkman's periodic eruptions.[62]

Slinkman has a lot of responsibilities around camp; he genuinely loves children, particularly those of Jelly Bean Cabin and sometimes acts like one of them. He is a master at shadow puppets, complete with an imitation of Scoutmaster Lumpus and a good prankster.[63] He has a not-so-secret desire to be a race-car driver and reads racing magazines.[29] Slinkman has worked for Lumpus for five years now, and until the Slugfest event, has not had a vacation.[60] In the first few seasons, Slinkman always carried around a clipboard, saying, "Yes Sir", almost every time Slinkman was told by Lumpus to do something while carrying a clipboard. He later abandons it and says, "Yes sir", less and less as the series progresses, eventually getting to the point of rarely saying it or not saying it at all.

Slinkman can run as fast as all the other characters and possibly faster, which is ironic for a slug. He was a replacement for Jane Doe while she was away and ends up having the same personality (like Lumpus) after him being treated unfairly by the Squirrel Scouts but when they were in real danger, Slinkman realized he was behaving like Lumpus and after reverting to his normal self, saved the Squirrel Scouts. Slinkman's catchphrase is "Hey man, how's it goin'?", which aggravates Lumpus. His birthday is on June 9.[63]

When boating around the Squirrels Scouts' camp, Slinkman and Lumpus were often prey to the watermelons thrown by Ms. Mucus. Slinkman later learns to counter them by smashing with a baseball bat.[9] Slinkman and Lazlo appear to be kindred spirits; when the new Bean Scout Handbook edition is about to be delivered, both of them are extremely excited, going to the post office to eagerly await its delivery.[41]

[edit] Commander Hoo-Ha

Commander Hoo-Ha is a buffalo whose name comes from the military exclamation "Hoo-Ha" (or "Hoo-rah") which is a stereotypical saying in the military. He is the leader for both Camp Kidney and Acorn Flats. His appearances brings the whole camp into a state of anxiety, as the penalty for failing his camp inspection is no clean underwear for a year. [64] It seems that he doesn't know Slinkman's name because Hoo-ha keeps calling him "Slugman", which Slinkman tries to unsuccessfully correct. He does not seem to know or care what a platypus is and refers to Edward as some sort of beaver-duck. When things or situations please Hoo-Ha, they are "fabulous!"

His daughter is Patsy Smiles, of the Squirrel Scouts, and Hoo-Ha is highly protective of her, sometimes to the point of violence. He once mentioned that he attends "court ordered" anger management classes. [65] Lazlo seems to be his favourite scout. [66] [67]

His name and behavior suggests that he was once a marine. The insignia on his arm reveals him to be a staff sergeant, but his title, Commander, is a rank in the Navy; the insignia on his chest is that of a three-star general, also known as a Lieutenant General. He drives a vehicle which resembles a Humvee, license plate number "Hrumph", (the sound of an angry grunt or snort), decorated with flags bearing a single star, which is the insignia of a general.

He is voiced by Jeff Bennett.

[edit] Chef Heimlich McMuesli

Chef Heimlich McMuesli is Camp Kidney's goat cook. His name is a direct pun on muesli, a Swiss cereal. McMuesli appears to be a health food nut, what one might even call a hippie. He's either vegetarian or totally vegan, drives a van which looks suspiciously like an old VW Bus complete with flowers painted on the side. He would rather serve the camp tofu based food but when the campers revolt against him, he leaves his post to go hiking. [24] McMuesli bears a cheerful nature but displays impatience at times, as demonstrated when his meals are made fun of by Lazlo. He has a stash where all sugar foods and drinks that were taken from campers are held and no camper, but Samson, can get past his security system, because McMuesli spots flies instead of bigger animals. McMuseli also thinks soda is for losers.

Originally Murray created McMuesli as the camp deacon; Cartoon Network discouraged religious elements, so McMuesli became the cook. [2]

McMuesli is voiced by Carlos Alazraqui.

[edit] Nurse Leslie

Nurse Leslie is a male [2] pink nurse shark and is Camp Kidney's nurse. He is usually seen with a cup of coffee in his hand and sitting on a wheeled chair and a rather bored expression on his face. He tends to all the campers' ailments and issues excuses when necessary, though it is very apparent that he hates his job and does not like dealing with the Bean Scouts. He cannot stand the waiting room's music and does not know the source of it in order to shut it off[68]. He knows a good deal about First Aid, but is often too bored or distracted to do a proper job. For example, when Lazlo has a leech on his head the x-ray clearly shows a leech drinking Lazlo's blood, Nurse Leslie tells Lazlo it looks fine to him[69]. He never walks from place to place, instead propelling himself using a swivel stool that he always sits on. He has sat on the stool for years and has lost his leg strength. When he tries to leave the stool, his legs crumble. [2] In some episodes he has a sea-green eye and a white eye, while in others he has two white eyes. It is also seen that he is severely under-appreciated and is sometimes forced to sit with the Bean Scouts, thus causing him to quit when Acorn Flats gives him a job offer; he rejoins when Lumpus gave him the title "Nurse Master".[70]

Murray named the character "Leslie" which, in the English language, is gender ambiguous. Murray created Leslie when "Parasitic Pal," created by Murray and Mark O'Hare, required the role of a nurse. O'Hare created the trait involving Leslie sitting in his stool at all times. [2]

He is voiced by Doug Lawrence.

[edit] Minor Bean Scouts

[edit] Harold

Harold is a gray walrus scout from Camp Kidney. His role has strengthened over the episodes, where he once was just an unnamed background character, now he seems to be developing into a larger role.

He speaks in a country/Southern United States drawl, but when he hosts the early evening block of the Camp Kidney Radio station, he speaks in an extremely deep voice. [71] His cabinmates are the unnamed stork scout and Milt the hippo.

He is the only minor scout to have a starring role in more than one episode. [72] [73] [35] He got sick of always being in the background and decided to do something about it. He tries to tries impress Raj, much to Raj's extreme annoyance, after Harold tries to copy Raj. Raj tells him to "don't call, don't write, don't drop by unexpectedly". This sends him into a bitter depression. Once Raj relents, Harold reveals that he always wanted to be a super hero named "Captain Banana Pants". [73] After that, it was revealed to be a story, true or not. Later they asked what his name really was, and he didn't say. He was also one of the campers whom aliens copied in order to fool Samson. [39]

Harold is voiced by Steve Little.

[edit] Main Squirrel Scouts

[edit] Patsy Smiles

Patsy Smiles is a mongoose with bright pink hair. She gains a big crush on Lazlo in many episodes, and will pounce on him at any chance she gets; this plot device is repeated in many episodes, and is a basic character trait of Patsy. Jodi Benson voiced Patsy.

In an interview Murray said that Patsy's affection causes Lazlo to feel "little freaked out" and that "She scares him." He describes Patsy as "a little more aggressive with Lazlo than he would ever reciprocate." [3] Patsy enjoys reading scary stories to her friends because she likes scaring people. She lied about knowing various martial arts to impress Lazlo and later revealed her feelings when he confronted her about lying.[74]

Patsy would be considered ringleader of the Squirrel Scouts. Most of the time, Patsy is the instigator of the girls antics, and the other girls willingly follow her lead.[75][50][76]

She considers Gretchen as a very good friend of hers. They have a semi-rivalry with each other, as seen on certain occasions throughout the series. Gretchen helps Patsy with getting Nina, another one of her friends, back from a trio of aliens.[77]

She has an allergy to cheese, using this reaction to great effect when she eats cheese to bloat up and tricks Nina into thinking Patsy is an alien, calling herself Gorgonzola.[77] In "I've Never Bean in a Sub," she eats a grilled cheese sandwich [21].

[edit] Nina Neckerly

Nina is a scholarly giraffe with a "long, long neck" and a "high squeaky voice" who is best friends with Patsy and Gretchen. The press release describes Nina as "gangly" and "bookish."[1]

She has a penchant for science fiction, reading sci-fi books, attending sci-fi conventions and for reading comics; she's frequently seen reading one. Her favorite story to read is Tales to Stupify[26]. She has a "secret science workshop", a cabin where she designs crazy inventions and where she can get away from people.[77]

She believed her soulmates are Chip and Skip due to a result from a Ouija board[78]. She also has talent for unicycling. Her solo act in the pageant was portraying an air traffic controller[79]. After she and the other Squirrel Scouts mistook the meaning of the pageant for something that would enable them to fly, Nina became the first to attempt to do so. In the end, she went airborne for a moment but splatted on the floor.

She helps Patsy, Gretchen, Almondine and Honey win a tug of war against the Bean Scouts.[14]

She's also the only Squirrel Scout who's an only child which became a bit of a disappointment to her.[80]

Nina is voiced by Jill Talley.

[edit] Gretchen

Gretchen is an aggressive and perpetually irritable and angry alligator, with blond hair. The official Cartoon Network press kit describes her as "ever-hungry" and desiring to eat "everyone, especially happy monkeys."[1]

She rounds out the trio of main Squirrel Scouts. Among the Squirrel Scouts, she is the most tomboyish. She and Ms. Mucus have one thing in common; they both despise Bean Scouts. Although she hates Bean Scouts, she had a big crush on Edward.[7]

She has been known to help the Squirrel Scouts win tug-of-war against the Bean Scouts through dirty tricks[14]. Clam once had a huge crush on her when he caught love sickness.

She has a crush on Edward[16][33], but appears to enjoy arguing with him. [81] It should be noted that she and Patsy do seem to have an on and off semi-rivalry with each other.

Gretchen is voiced by Jill Talley.

[edit] Almondine

Almondine is a wise beige owl, with dark brown hair. She wears large glasses like Nina, and similar to Nina, she is stereotypically "nerdy" in her appearance. She is the most commonly seen secondary Squirrel Scout, as well as the only secondary Squirrel Scout to have an entire episode to herself, somewhat similar to Harold's role.[82]

It is known that she loves mathematics, and she also enjoys theater. Her favorite actor is Rock Buckskin, and she feels that his latest flop, "Caribbean Caribou Two: Back in Action" really had no plot[9]. She is the second member of the Rock Buckskin Fan Club, which is led by Jane Doe.

Almondine, Amber (a greyish blue skin rabbit with light pink hair) and Gretchen are accountants for the Squirrel Scout's cookie business[83]. She makes an odd statement during the Fru Fru pageant, saying "I would like to be given the ability to fly"; which is ironic since she's an owl[79]. During a field trip with the Beans, she ends up sitting alone, and having the only available spot on the bus, much to Edward's discomfort.[16]

Almondine is voiced by Jodi Benson.

[edit] Acorn Flats Staff

[edit] Ms. Jane Doe

Jane Doe is one of the leaders of the Squirrel Scouts, Jane Doe is a ditzy and scatterbrained doe, who is completely oblivious to Scoutmaster Lumpus' infatuation of her (and pretty much everything else). The official Cartoon Network press kit describes her as resembling "an insecure substitute teacher."[1]

She cannot seem to remember Slinkman's name, as she refers to him as simply "the slug", or as Lumpus' pet slug. However, on the episode Step Clam, she and Slinkman reveal that they have been friends since they were children. She once almost ate a sandwich made with poisonous berries but was "saved" by Lumpus.[9]

She lives in Acorn Flats with her scouts and assistant, Miss Rubella Mucus. She is girly and tries to be a feminine influence on the Squirrel Scouts.

In her first appearance, she was fishing in Leaky Lake with huge success, which annoyed Lumpus to a high degree. [51] She is often seen with a positive expression but she does occasionally get frustrated.[79] Apparently, she won a beauty pageant but only because she was the only one in contention. She is also talented in unicycling, juggling and plate-spinning simultaneously.

She is the head of the Rock Buckskin Fan Club, of which the only other member is Almondine.[9]

Doe possesses a "Minnesota accent," a quality that Lumpus enjoys. [1] Towards the end of Camp Lazlo, Lumpus marries Doe. [2]

Jodi Benson voiced Doe; Murray describes Benson as giving Doe a "slightly crazy side to her that let her ride that edge." Murray describes her performances of Doe "losing it" as "legendary." [2]

[edit] Ms. Rubella Mucus

Ms. Rubella Mucus is a warthog who hates the Bean Scouts, saying that they are "bitter, dim and crude."[84] Mucus "will do anything" to shield the Squirrel Scouts from perceived threats. The Cartoon Network press kit describes her as bearing a "gruff, prison guard attitude."[1]

She actually planned to shut down Camp Kidney by making all of the members fail their physical tests.[66] She has a showdown with the Jelly Bean trio where it is revealed that she is extremely afraid of Bean Scout socks.[18]

She can play an organ and served as the organist for the Bean Scouts' theater [9] and during Jane Doe's and Lumpus' wedding[85] This is quite ironic for someone who despises Beans Scout to do something nice for them.

Because of all this, she is most likely the reason why some Squirrel Scouts tend to have hatred towards Bean Scouts in spite of having a very nice Scout mistress. Opposite of Jane Doe, she's rarely seen happy.

She is Ms. Jane Doe's assistant, with a type of Southern accent. She is also the person who blows the bugle for the Squirrel Scouts to wake up and leads them in their morning routines.

She is portrayed as a large and angry, stereotypical redneck woman. She lives in trailer and hoards any Bean Scout toy that comes near it. One room looked girlish and childish and was filled with toys[86], while another room looked like an office with her desk and a large portrait of herself in the NS. A large plaque in her office reads, "Tough Enough to Do it Right". She is shown carrying a taxi with Jane Doe as a passenger, which fits her tough personality; and bakes cookies using tire to knead dough, and a chainsaw as a cookie cutter.[87]

Her hair is actually a wig which she takes off before going for a swim. Lazlo finds the wig and uses it to become "Madame Lazlo". While driving by Camp Kidney in a police car, apparently after reporting the theft of her wig, she finds Lumpus dressed as a ballerina, wearing her wig.[88]

She is Acorn Flats' camp mascot[31], and also the scarecrow for Acorn Flats' sunflower garden.[84]

Ms. Mucus is voiced by Jill Talley.

[edit] Other Characters

  • Clyde: Clyde is the Big Bean's cousin, a fifty-foot tall bean who lives at the bottom of Leaky Lake and likes to scare campers. He appeared to Lazlo in a dream and told Lazlo how to save Camp Kidney from being turned into a parking lot. Voiced by Tom Kenny.[30]
  • Edward's Four Brothers: Joe Murray, creator of Camp Lazlo, stated that the situations involving the brothers provide insight into Edward's neurosis. Originally only verbally mentioned, they later made several personal appearances[89][90]. Their names are inconsistent within the universe. One originally named Mel[91], but later being named Cheesly, Alpine, Fancy Pants, and Philip [90]. Also alluded that they all were Bean Scouts. [89][91][90] Voiced variously by Mr. Lawrence and Jeff Glen Bennett.
  • General Sherman Beauregard Lumpus: Lumpus' great grandfather (1826-1907) who was a general during the Civil War. His prized tent "Old Ironside" was actually made from the stolen tents and possessions of his troops. At the end, they turned on him and sent him rolling down the hill onto the top of a train. He is last seen cleaning up after the elephants in the circus. He name is probably a reference to Civil War generals William Tecumseh Sherman and P. G. T. Beauregard.
  • Lifeguards Pierre and No-Neck: Camp Kidney's lifeguards. Although being lifeguards, in one episode it was revealed that they do not know how to swim! Pierre is voiced by Jeff Bennett and No-Neck is voiced by Carlos Alazraqui.
  • Mayor Pothole McPucker: The mayor of Prickly Pines. He is a hideous, misshapen pig. His eyes are two different sizes and shapes, which do not blink in sync with each other. He emits bodily odors at any moment, and emits streams of saliva when he speaks. His teeth sometimes dislodge. Most people are disgusted at his presence. He woos Jane Doe in The Engagement, becoming engaged to her. The engagement ends when he professes love for Lumpus. (who he thought to be female.) [2]

J.G. Quintell, a writer for Camp Lazlo, wanted a situation involving the mayor of Prickly Pines judging the most beautiful parade float as ugly. Murray developed the idea and Steve Little added the belching and spitting voice. [2]

  • Navy Turtle: A turtle who lives in a submarine in Leaky Lake, who appears in various episodes: Lazlo Loves a Parade, complaining about his false teeth stolen and The Engagement, were he told Jane Doe the he has his own submarine. Near the end of the episode, Jane Doe decided to become engaged to him for unknown and odd reasons. He is later refered to as Manfred.[92]
  • Tomato Scouts: Tomato Scouts are Bean Scouts who completed earning merit badges. Commander Hoo-Ha approves each of them personally. Those who cheat are sent to a military type camp called Camp SkullCrush. When Edward faked earning all the badges, he almost became a Tomato Scout, and Lumpus has actually been through the experience. According to Hoo-Ha, they come as eager young men and you leave as hardened men, ready for the cold, cruel world. According to Commander Hoo Haa, Tomato Scouts never leave the war zone.
  • The Scoutmaster in the Sky: The Scoutmaster in the Sky (S.M.I.T.S.) is a god who all the Bean Scouts apparently believe in. On earlier episodes, he is shown as being fictional. However, he is seen on the episode Bad Luck Be a Camper Tonight, although only from the neck down. He resides in the Scout Camp in the Sky.
