"Lisa on Ice" is the eighth episode of The Simpsons' sixth season. With Principal Skinner's advent of "academic alerts," Lisa discovers that she is in peril of failing a class for the first time in her life. In trying to salvage her gym grade, she finds she possesses a bent for hockey, and rivalry with Bart in the rink escalates into their home life and beyond, fueled considerably by parents and coaches.

[edit] Plot

When Principal Skinner calls all the students down for an assembly to tell them what subjects they are failing, Lisa discovers to her horror that she is flunking gym class. In order to pass and get the straight A's she desires, she must join an outside of school sports program. The family go to see Bart play ice hockey for his team, the defending champions, the Mighty Pigs, coached by Chief Wiggum. After the game Bart begins shooting pieces of litter at Lisa with his stick, and Apu, the coach of the Kwik-E-Mart Gougers, notices that she’s a natural at hockey goaltending and makes her goalie for his team. Lisa soon becomes the star player, leading them to their best season ever.

A sibling rivalry developes between Bart and Lisa, and it peaks shortly before when the Gougers face the Mighty Pigs. With the game tied with four seconds left Bart is about to attempt a penalty shot against Lisa. However, upon remembering the fond memories they have had together before they began fighting, they throw aside their equipment and embrace. The match is tied and the residents of Springfield, not satisfied with this outcome, begin tearing the stadium to pieces.

[edit] Further info

  • When Chief Wiggum is talking to Snake in the prison, Snake's shirt has the number 7F20 on it. This is the production code for "The War of the Simpsons," the first episode in which Snake makes an appearance.
  • Lou and Eddie sit behind Marge and Homer in the "Lisa vs. Bart" game, although Eddie has a different hair styling than usual. It is similar to that of Ralph Wiggum's
  • Homer is actually left-handed in this episode when he is signing all of Bart's warning slips. In every episode before and after, he is clearly right-handed. It may be that Homer is ambidextrous, and prefers his right hand.
  • During Bart's penalty shot, the clock counts down, which is not supposed to happen (the clock should remain stopped).
  • One of Bart's notices contains the word "WARNING:" followed by strings of letters which do not form valid words in the English Language such as "Tsnhoji", "Namreb", "Toi", "Easlnpxit", "Alne", "Saeonarf" and "Trauts". Note, however, that the second and last of these are respectively "Berman" and "Stuart" spelled backwards.
  • This episode aired during the 1994-95 NHL lockout.
  • The theme heard in the episode's final credits, an arena-style electric organ remix of The Simpsons theme song, is occasionally played at Calgary Flames' hockey games on the organ.
  • While singing the national anthem, Krusty says that he should not have turned down cue cards, despite the fact that he can not read. However, as this episode takes place a while after Krusty Gets Busted, wherein it is revealed that Krusty is illiterate, it is possible that Krusty has begun learning to read and would thus be able to use cue cards.
  • The hockey game is tied in the third period, no one scores, and then the game ends. The game should have gone into overtime (although house league regular season games do not go into OT). Mike Scully admits on the DVD commentary for this episode that he completely forgot about this aspect and takes full responsibility for the inaccuracy. However, the crowd does break into a riot after the game ends, and the sight of Bart and Lisa's embrace, so that is considered a fair ending.
  • Some time after this episode aired, "The Simpsons" received an award from an organization that promotes wholesome family relationships on television. At the ceremony, they screened the ending of this episode, but cut it off after Bart and Lisa's reconciliation, before the tie game causes the agitated crowd to explode in a violent riot. Executive producer David Mirkin was so upset by the organization's misuse of the episode that when he went up to accept the honors, he vehemently expressed his anger with the organization and told the audience exactly how the clip was supposed to end.
  • Lisa dressed in hockey gear would later be seen in the season six episode Homer vs. Patty and Selma (when Lisa chooses hockey as part of her new gym class) and in the season 16 episode There's Something About Marrying (in the couch gag where the Simpsons are hockey players skating around the couch and holding the Stanley Cup [except for Maggie, all of them have missing teeth and Homer has a black eye]).

[edit] Cultural references

  • Kent Brockman says that "Ronald Reagan dies....his hair." A pun on the fact that "dies" and "dyes" sound the same and the false rumors surrounding Reagan (who was still alive in 1994)'s hair. (Even at old age he still had very black hair, which lead some people to believe he dyed the greyness away.)
  • Chief Wiggum's team is called The Mighty Pigs. This is a parody of the Disney movie and NHL team the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, which got their name changed to just the Ducks in 2006.
  • While playing basketball Marge tells Bart to watch for her "Shaq attack". A reference to Shaquille O' Neal.
