The story takes place in Pennsylvania and tells the story of a 16 year old girl named Miranda, whose life is interrupted when a meteor hits the moon. As a result, worldwide disasters such as tsunamis, earthquakes, and volcanoes occur. Every day is a struggle as, supermarkets run out of food, and gas runs up to about ten dollars a gallon. Her family must get by as a seemingly apocalyptic winter comes about. Throughout the novel her relationship with her friends and family is tested.

Pfeffer's inspiration for the novel was the 1979 film Meteor.[6]
