Legend Press

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Legend Press is a small UK book publisher founded in 2005 by then 25-year-old Tom Chalmers. Specialising in mainstream trade paperback fiction, Legend Press became the youngest-run publisher in the UK trade market. In 2006, the company set out its intention to double the number of titles it publishes each year until reaching 20-25 in 2009 [1]. As well as the range of novels, London-based Legend Press also began an annual short story series looking to boost the popularity of short fiction and make it more aligned to today's reader and society.

Legend Press additionally set out its aim to be as accessible and interactive as possible and became one of the first UK publishers to launch a MySpace page [2] , as well as offering a variety of other services and initiatives.

[edit] Founder

Chalmers was born in Leicester on October 22, 1979, the fourth of five siblings — three sisters and a brother — and lived in the village of Anstey until attending Liverpool University from 1999-2002 where he studied English. There he was awarded the Sir William Rathbone Scholarship in Psychology, which he took as a subsidiary subject. Chalmers moved to London in 2003 looking to gain a position in publishing.

He set-up Legend Press in 2005 and, aged 25, became the youngest Managing Director of a publishing company in the mainstream UK market. In March 2007, Founder and Managing Director Tom Chalmers was shortlisted for the inaugural UK Young Publisher of the Year Award [3].

In October 2007 Tom was shortlisted for the UK Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award. The annual award is part of the Real Business/CBI Growing Business Awards.

As well as running Legend Press, Chalmers became involved in helping aspiring writers and those looking to work in publishing and undertook a university speaking tour, general talks, involvement in recruitment events, and regular interviews and articles, including a series for the Writers Service [4].
