Isn't H now thought to be Mael Muire? Leighman (talk) 14:45, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
- According to an article I have (Gearóid Mac Eoin, "The Interpolator H in Lebor na hUidre", Ulidia, 1994, pp. 39-46), Tomás Ó Cocheannainn ("The Reviser of Leabhar na hUidhre", Éigse 15, 1974, pp. 277-288) argued that in 1974, and a few agreed with him, but H. P. A. Oskamp ("Mael Muire: Compiler or Reviser?", Éigse 16, 1976, pp. 177-182) argued against it and in favour of Best's identification of M as Mael Muire, apparently on the basis that the handwriting of the probationes pennae matches that of M much better than that of H, which is the basis Best made the identification in the first place. The consensus of scholars seems to be with Best and Oskamp rather than with Ó Concheannainn. I didn't refer to these arguments when I wrote the paragraph on Best's identification of the hands, based mainly on Best's intro to Lebor na hUidre and the Mac Eoin article, because I haven't read them and am therefore only aware of them second hand. But if you can get hold of Ó Concheannainn and Oskamp's articles, I'm sure their arguments would make an interesting addition to the article. --Nicknack009 (talk) 16:37, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
