Larry M. Hyman (born September 26, 1947 in Los Angeles) is Professor of Linguistics in the Department of Linguistics at the University of California at Berkeley. He is a specialist in phonology, and has particular interest in African languages. He received his B.S., M.A, and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California at Los Angeles.

He has received received numerous grants for his research, mostly from the National Science Foundation, and has won several awards, both within and beyond the University. He has published many papers and contributed to many books.

Hyman is editor or on the editorial board of many journals in his field, including Linguistic Inquiry, Journal of African Languages & Linguistics, Language, Natural Language and Linguistic Theory, Lingua Descriptive Series, Phonology (Yearbook), Linguistic Typology and Africana Linguistica (Musée Royal de He has been since 1999 Chair, Editorial Board, University of California Publications in Linguistics.

He has published over 120 peer-reviewed articles, many chapters in academic books, and numerous conference talks.
